how much you guys spent in all your fishing gear in your life time? I think I spent like 3500$ around.

No, I give it to people who need it like friends or family. Or it gets retired on my fishing rack for being such an awesome memory stick at that point.

I'm pushing 55 now and since I started when I was 12, I would hate to think. Add in club memberships and the cost of fishing rivers in the UK (you have to pay an additional fee above your rod license to be able to access trout or salmon fishing in the UK), then the cost can be horrendous.

I don't keep track. pretty sure I have spent more than a few thousand on tying materials over the years. This is more a question for our wives to answer LoL

I'm pushing 55 now and since I started when I was 12, I would hate to think. Add in club memberships and the cost of fishing rivers in the UK (you have to pay an additional fee above your rod license to be able to access trout or salmon fishing in the UK), then the cost can be horrendous.
Hahaha I could imagine. I only took up fishing a few months ago, and I've already sunk a few hundred into rods, reels, lures, baits, line, a net, rod holder, tackle box........ And the most I've spent on a single item was a $75 reel! Everything else was $20 or under I think (lots of used stuff.)

It would be very hard to calculate, but I am fortunate that I have recieved much of my gear as gifts over the years, as well as inheriting some pretty good stuff as well. The gas money is what really adds up fast. Probably around $1000 a year on fuel, if not more.

I wouldn't even want to guess, been fishing for 52 years now. Add in a couple boats, motors, trailers and trucks as well as fuel and gear $100K+

Being fishing for more than 48 years....... with all those money I spend all fishing toys, boats, trips etc. could brought a second home. ;D

Great post, Rodney. That is the same government that does not value what the angling community adds to the economy.
I'm 74 and I've been a serious angler for over 60 years. I shudder to think of what I've spent on fishing. But, the upside is that it has kept me young and fit. It guided my whole life and my choice in my 40 year career. I don't regret one cent.

Yearly nowadays 2000 including gas.Average last 20 yrs so probably much more than 40k.Told the wife 10k though.LOL.

58 & turning 59 on Jan 6. so have been fishing on& off for 53 yrs.
Boat/lake,bar rig on Fraser R,then 4 boats salt fishing.
Easily 60,000 plus.
That's a lotta "clams" ( slang for $ )
Bet a private owner or provincial owned fishing area along the Fraser would do well $ wise.
Have a food take out & sell needed fishing supplies. ( pizza coffee burger fries ). Fix the shore area with sand, & Sandy river bottom with nice slope. Give each plotted area 25 feet of shore.
Have a nice table / bench & fire pit. Washrooms. At plot there's electrical sewer for those who want to camp out. $20 per night.
Owner can charge $10 per car. Have 100 fishing plots.
Sell firewood. ( or person can bring their own )
Have another area that one can launch boats. $10 per boat.
Think a person could make good $$$.
There seems to be more & more people interested in fishing & willing to spend $$$$.
Gov. is short sighted & missing out of a lot of tax dollars.
They should be encouraging the sports fishery & building more boat launches on & on.

A novel idea, but 100 fishing plots, each 25 feet long, is 2500 feet of Fraser River shoreline. I can't imagine property of that size in that location would be very cheap.
Also, there would be problems with making it a sandy beach if it isn't already - any sand you put down will just get washed away come the freshet in spring.

I like easy fishing as much as the next guy, but I'm not one for privatization of our wilderness. All shore should be public land, and if anything maybe some more bears and mountain lions could be released in said areas, trails made steeper, muddier and slippery so only the truly dedicated would go out..
But seems to me cuts in government support for recreational fishing etc comes in hand with cuts to support for cultural/artistic programs, people want lower taxes and call for smaller governments but the expect the same service. Good luck with that.
I wouldn't mind paying more, a lot more, for my license etc as long as I know with certainty that will get value for that money, but I suppose that is the main problem.
Ultimately, fishing is good bang for buck as far as hobbies go. Beauty of it is you can make it as expensive as you want. Catch the same fish with a $50 combo, but I'm likely going to end up with a $600 combo, still cheaper than being into BMWs or something
Along with others, gas is my most expensive fishing related cost. Makes rods and reels pale in comparison, and I drove a Corolla. Can't imagine what it costs the guys with trucks. In gear, probably about $2-2500 in 3 years. I have noticed that i enjoy my equipment a lot more once I stop babying it, and it's a lot easier with gear that isn't super expensive. Though a "perfect" rod (for you) is worth the money..and i can see the allure of collecting centerpins/reels beyond their utility.

Nothing like that one go to combo once you get in broken in!
easily 10K+ between all the rods, pontoon boats, gear, fly tying materials etc!
Thats not including the gas that the F150 takes. Really makes you question whether its worth driving up and down the river rather than just going for a long walk n wade

I am 50 and have only been fishing for 5 years so I have been trying very hard to catch up.
If you only count rods and terminal gear then I have spent maybe 10K.
If I had never caught a fish, which includes not having or using boats, gas, and other services, then I would be about 40K "richer".
But I have picture on my wall of my son (16 at the time) and my dad (82 at the time) holding a steelie. That picture cost me about $1,000 all in, except the damage to the truck when I hit a deer on the way to the river. I have a another picture on my wall of my son and two of his friends holding a #32 ocean caught Spring. That one cost about $1,500.
No regrets here.

Think how much money we could have saved if we didn't have girl friends and wives and kids? :) ;D
The funny thing is that most men don't start actually saving money and investing it until they actually DO meet woman.
