Just saw this too - damn shame as it was such an active organization and community.

Really unfortunate. According to Global, the hatchery was quite successful. Hopefully it gets rebuilt for next year.

How the hell does a frigging hatchery burn down? That is the last thing I would think that would burn down. Fire takes fuel! How does something built on cement surrounded by water catch on fire?

I had it in the fishery issue section, so just moved it over and merged the two together.

Why can't you check all the sections before posting?? Come on... ;)

Yeah, good question! Sad loss, though. Hopefully they can get money to rebuild soon.

Like everything else around here, I suspect the building was probably wood-frame on a concrete foundation.

And If you've seen the location, its more surrounded by forest than it is water. If this sort of thing happened at a different time of year (ie middle of a hot summer) it could have been much worse.

I suspect this years Fingerling Festival held at Noons Creek Hatchery will have some sort of fundraiser or something.

Much better. ;)

I've been corresponding with Ruth Foster, who's one of the founders of the hatchery. She will let me know when they start planning the rebuilding and if help, both financial and practical, is needed.

The incubated eggs from this year's broods in the facility have been lost due to the fire, but the 1 year old juvenile coho salmon rearing outside the building survived and will be released next spring.

Update! The hatchery will be hosting a gala summer barbecue on Sunday July 13th at the Galleria/City Hall in Port Moody to raise fund for the rebuilding of the hatchery. Since the fire, this dedicated group of stream stewards has come a long way. Building plans have been refined, development permits are in the works, we have received a large grant from the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the community has shown in many ways that it cares and wants our hatchery and nature education centre to be rebuilt. The goal is to raise $110,000. Please mark on your calendar and be a part of this rebuilding so future salmon and their guardians can be raised! More information will be available as the date approaches.
