The Vedder River has a few more kilometers of quality off channel fish habitat, thanks to funding by the Pacific Salmon Foundation. The work was undertaken by the habitat restoration unit of DFO, in collaboration with the Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition. This new waterway has it's gate controlled water intake at Giesbreck Road (sp), almost beside the campground and will eventually connect the various wetted areas all the way downstream to the railway bridge. The best part of this new habitat is that it is protected by the dyke along the river, meaning it is permanent and cannot be lost to flooding. This channel has been designed for coho but will attract lots of chums as well. Lots of gravel, large woody debris, and most importantly, a constant, steady flow of water.
Next time you're fishing this system, check it out. This channel can be accessed from Giesbreck, Browne and Bergman Roads.

This particular enhancement project has been planned by DFO for years. Funding by the Pacific Salmon Foundation made it work.

Groundwater fed lower river trib, wouldn't be any other than lates. Maybe some blackheads will start poking their noses in there too?

Hey nibs, you might not need to jumpstart this new habitat ... had a look today and saw several coho spawning. JR reports seeing up to 50 yesterday. Great to see late run coho back in this system!
Anglers, take some time to check out this channel as it is definitely money well spent.

I have seen more late run coho this year in the Vedder than ever before. I even got a chrome coho on the fly New Year's Day, a first for me catching a clean coho in January. This new habitat on the lower river may have just come at the right time, with a lot of late runners around this year, and give them a good place to spawn.

Yup, we both saw fish in DFO constructed off channel habitat. Of course I'm a bit biased ;) but kudos here to the DFO guys who pushed for this and are so passionate about this stuff.

So important to have these done to try and improve our salmon runs.
