Fellas,
Some well meaning advice from you guys please; Is it still worth the while fishing at the Stave River at this time and if so where should I try to get a parking spot that is legal if I am willing to walk. I have not been there for years now and so with construction work and so on, I might need some good direction from you guys. Thanks in advance.
-
Lots of chrome chum still rolling in. I was there yesterday and hooked many that were very bright.
-
Thanks! Any suggestion for safe parking if I am willing to walk?
-
Fresh fish all over the place. Coho yesterday had lice on them still.
Parking depends on a few factors like what kind of water etc your looking for or how far a walk your willing to do.
Drive around, legal safe parking is easy to find as is river access from either side.
Tough part may be getting away from the rippers flossers and people with little understanding of etiquette and manners, even I have a hard time with that recently.
-
Thanks guys; I think I hear you loud and clear and will go prepared. Walking is part of my fishing trip and I enjoy that too; crowd might be a different issue but I'll go with a healthy attitude. Thanks again.
-
Went with my old man and a buddy yesterday. Was there for a couple hours, between us 3 we hooked into quite a few fish. Enjoy the sun, and get out there :)
-
Probably a stupid question but will I need my waders?
-
I would say yes. You will be more appreciative wearing them, rather then not.
-
Thanks!
-
If it pisses down like last Saturday, go with the waders. But if its a warm sunny day you can get away without.
-
im thinking of going to stave on saturday would there still be chum in there ?
-
Yes there will be, not sure how many fresher ones though, but with the rain all week I wouldn't be surprised to see some around. Most will be deep into spawning and looking for some rest lol though.
-
i went to vedder today i should have went to the stave instead i wont be keeping them anyways just catch and release lol
-
Saturday is November 9th... Hmm, there won't be any chum salmon in the Stave River then unfortunately.
They'll all be in Chilliwack, at the used fishing tackle swap meet because that's where all the good spoons, spinners and jigs will be.

You can fish both rivers the same day. They are pretty close together.

Can somebody help me out a little, I want to fish the stave, I have some cured roe I could use, and I will bring some jigs, spoons, spinners, and wool. Just wondering is it worth it to bring roe? Anybody know of the parking situation as of late? I only have a couple pinks in the freezer and want to add some more fish to the freezer. Thanks

What do you want chum or coho?

Float fish jigs with a piece of a prawn. Pink, pink & purple, and purple jigs I have found to work well for them, damn near every cast if you can find a decent area. Make sure that you are well off bottom with the jig. I usually am around 2 1/2 feet jig to float and the water is about 6-7 feet deep where I go.
-
What about Coho in the Stave, the only place i have seen any coho is the toilet bowl. I prefer to fish the west side but i havent seen many coho. Will they be at the Dam or slacker water towards the mouth?
-
There are coho throughout the river. Top to bottom. You just have to look for them.
-
based on what i read so far, Coho prefer slower moving water? so look for them in pooling water?

Thanks for the reply, I'm just going to fish the east side where I usually fish. I don't have cured prawn, but I do have cured roe and cured krill.

No need for the prawns to be cured, I usually add a bit of course salt to them to toughen them up a bit. I use the ones from a shrimp ring and cut each prawn in half so that they last longer. Easy to go through an entire ring of prawns in a day there when fishing is hot lol
-
And easy to go through when the fishing is slow too.... damn tasty things.. ;)

Thanks, Anybody know any access points to the west side, never been on that side. Was wondering if it is less of walk and if there is even legal parking there.
-
there are spots to park, just require walking. Don't pay attention to some of the parking signs as some of them are not "right". Someone have took time to erase the arrow pointing in the direction you can't park. From what i heard, people were still getting ticket for parking in these areas which should be addressed. That is up to you to decide if the risk is worth it, look closely and you will see that the arrow was scratched off.
-
Is this on the west side? Anybody know of approximately where to start looking for a parking spot on the west side?

Start looking when you reach the river. Seriously, the entire river is only 3km long, how much more information do you need? Turn onto the road, look for parking and park when you find a spot to park, then go fish.
-
I've never been to the west side, I was just looking for a starting point.

You've been looking for a starting point in almost all of your posts. ::)

Like I said, from the Lougheed to the dam is only 3 km, so you don't want a starting point, you want a parking spot. No matter where you park on the west side you are a ten minute walk from fish. It is not like the east side where you have the lake between the road and the river for the first 2 km. After the first km you can see the river from the road. Just park and start exploring. You will find the access points quick enough.
-
Ok Thanks, That's all I needed, I would assume there are "no parking" signs on the west side? Would waders be a good choice for the west side, I know they are a must for the east. Thank you,

According to Hydro, there is a parking lot just past the dam.
-
There is a parking lot North of the dam along Wilson st. Its the start of the Railway trail along one side of Hayward lake reservoir.
Waders never hurt, its wet, muddy and you may need to be in shallow water to cast in some spots.
Plus as has been mentioned many times it helps to handle and release fish without beaching them.

X2. Like I had mentioned before, it's better to be wearing them and glad you did, then standing there without them wishing you had brought them. Plus if you have them on and want to escape the people on the beach .... you can.
-
Thanks guys, I have limited time when I do go but I will make sure to explore and hopefully find a spot.
-
A lot of fish are waiting for you , so go and have fun. Tight line. ;)

Thanks.
