Had a strange experience yesterday at my favorite river. Was fishing with small 4 hook with roe small presentation, A small fish about 4 inches took the bait, I was pulling it in gently when all of a sudden a large Coho came over and attacked it. I landed the Coho which was a nice hatchery doe of 10 lbs with the fry in its mouth. Hook was on Coho's tongue with the fry hanging on to the skein of the row. Sorry, didn't have my camera with me for pictures. What is amazing is the small fish was still alive inside the Coho mouth and I was able to let it swim off. That's one lucky fish!! Not so lucky for the Coho, it became dinner.

Uh! You should`ve bought a lottery ticket yesterday ;D

Don't think you should have kept the coho but it's a good story nonetheless.
The use of fin fish (dead or alive) or parts
of fin fish other than roe is prohibited
throughout the province

But he wasn't fishing with it as bait. just some Damn fine luck...
-
I'd give him a pass since it wasn't intentional (you could argue that the coho bit the original bait).
If he casted again with the minnow on then I'd book him :-*

Grey area indeed. Would have to ask the doe whether she was after the fish or the roe :)

Agree!
Their is not one CO that would ticket him for this! That's a one in a million possibility. Also it's pretty damn cool!

Amazing the small fish still was well enough,to swim away after such an ordeal.
Many many moons ago was fishing a small lake in Maple Ridge off a small dock. UBC had some facilities there. My dad not having much fishing know how decided to cast out a bar rig with a small sinker. The crazy part he was not going to let it sink rather to cast & reel in.
I basically told him he'd never catch anything with that set up & he should use a spoon.
His 1st cast he gets a fish on!!!
Just as the presentation hit the water.
Another time was riding my pedal bike along a Pitt River dyke.
Decided to check out a drainage ditch.
Looking into the clear 1.5 ft water I could not believe my eyes !!!
Two fish heads only were in the water in a proper position with the gills moving.
One head was about 8 inches behind the other & 4 inches to the side.
My guess is some otter bit off 85% of the main bodies.
But how is it the heads were upright & gills moving?
Plus they were looking the same direction.
One would think two fish heads with no bodies would be just laying on the sandy bottoms sideways & rocking a little in the movement of the water.
Like member "fisherman" true story there are things one never forgets as it is just not the norm.

I think sometimes on this forum we take things too far.
It is a great story and one I'm sure OP will not forget anytime soon.

While bass fishing in Ontario in the 70's my buddy hooked into a nice large mouth. About ten feet from the boat as it was dancing on the surface a 35LB Muskellunge attacked the bass and inhaled it. Landed and released the muskie.

I'd be curious to know if the coho was going after the roe, and the fish got in the way, or if it was actually going after fish.
Maybe it saw the small fish eating the roe and it went into redd defense mode....maybe
Cool story. Thx

maybe coho actually do eat smolts in the river. being they are the same size as the herring and needlefish in the salt.

What a great fish story! No there was no reason to release the fish as he was not fishing with a live fish or fish parts etc. At worse this was a 'windfall' scenario and the courts don't normally find against people in such situations.
Really some people act like overly stern parents than thoughtful adults when judging other anglers. :-*
I have caught cutthroat that puked up live minnows likewise I have found live dragon fly nymphs in the stomach of interior rainbows and put them back in the lake.

Cool story, something you won't ever forget! Too bad that camera wasn't rolling to capture that one!
