They are for dangerous fish you don't wanna stick your hands anywhere near. Fish around here are not that toothy - yeah salmon have teeth especially some of those chum, but even then it's overkill.

No need to "grib the libs" of salmonids... grabbing the caudal peduncle (wrist/tail) and maintaining a firm hold calms the fish and allows you to unhook it with ease.

For fish that are harder to 'grib' onto, like sturgeon, you may want to consider using gloves. Many guys wear them when guiding in the salt. But there is no need to hold onto the fish's lips while releasing it...just grab the hook with pliers and pop it out.

Bass were basically designed to be lib gribbed IMO

Your use of "b" should instead be the use of the letter "p".  Lib & Grib should = Lip & Grip.  :)

And IMO they are unnecessary for local fish such as salmon and trout.  I suppose if you used a clamp in the mouth and kept the fish horizontal in the water the damage would be minimal, but why bother when tailing the fish is very effective and when done correctly probably causes less harm than a jaw grip?

If I was fishing for something aggressive and toothy, like a snake head pirahna or wolf fish then sure I would use a lip grip... but the fish you run into here are just not mean enough to warrant. Ask yourself "Will this fish try to eat my hand?"
