Title: Stave River, October 24th 2013
Post by: leadbelly on October 24, 2013, 03:18:05 PM
Wanted to do a Stave report as there were none, oddly, and I wanted to at least make one non pink report lol.
Maybe give the weekenders some idea what to expect also.
Very Very low in the morning.
Very few chum, Yes they are on the gravel beds getting flossed and the lower deeper water in some numbers but watching the tide roll in at the mouth and you see nothing, no waves of jumping fish at all. In fact some channels I walked today had zero fish showing, it looked like December not late October.
Coho are fair to good, not exceptional like last year and lots more unclipped than Ive seen before.
Also the boats are fishing the Fraser for the next few days including today.
While fishing a clear deep channel today I had a seal the size of well, a huge seal come gliding in under my rod tip then turn around and split. Yes I ran out of the water screaming Poop Darn Frig as fast as I could. Scary man.
Also I got a nice doe today with three large skeins o roe, never had that before.

Thanks for the report. I may brave the crowds this weekend. The only dilemma is how to fish it. I always gave trouble deciding. Lol
Fly, drift, spoons, or spey... tough choices.

Thanks for the report - nice catch there.
Never seen three skeins on a salmon before.

You sure you didn't accidentally break the larger one into two?

It was 90 percent separate with two separate membranes. About twice the roe I was expecting and large eggs, fecundity off the charts, or scale. lol

Did we get too off topic? looks like we lost half the thread, I thought the parking info was constructive but maybe I missed something lol.

I fished the west side on the falling tide after work. Not a single fish showing for about an hour, very different than a couple days ago when there were alot of bright fish showing (and biting). Not sure if that was because of the commercial opening on the Fraser or not, but I'll blame them because it's easy...   ;)

No action at all on jigs or blades, but C&R'd 2 in rapid succession when I switched over to hardware. A very feisty doe with very chrome scales but a pitch black belly. I don't think I've ever seen one that conflicting in colour...and a typical hook-nosed male.

I've had a few like that. Chrome sides and black belly. I've only seen females like It though. I released them because of the black belly, I can be pretty picky when it comes to keeping chum.

3 skeins in same fish is very strange indeed.
I'll take that extra skein off your hands as it might have magical powers ;D
