I've been trying to Google this and had no luck.
You know the generic coil of pencil lead that you can buy at any tackle shop CDN Tire? Does any know the weight by inch?
It totally irks me when my float isn't balanced JUST right and I've been trying to track down the weight by inch so I can cut those suckers to a precise length! :P

I just weighed 1" of 1/4" pencil lead on my electronic powder scale. Weight is .324 ounces or 9.2 grams or 141.7 grains.
-
Calculate based on density of lead (11.34 g/cm^3) , 0.25" lead works out to about 9.1 g/inch.
I just weighed a one foot piece that worked out to 8.9 g/inch, so yep pretty close.

i find that 3'' of pencil lead will balance a 30 gram float well, 2.5'' a 25 gram float, 2'' a 20 gram. works pretty well

Perfect, thank you all very much. Better-balanced-float-city coming up, population: me.

Thanks x2!
Better-balanced-float-city population = 2.
Also, farther distance using my new center-pin (newbie).

When did Sheldon Cooper take up fishing? so technical.. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'll totally cop to that. When my float isn't perfectly balanced one of two things goes through my head:
1) The weight's too light... what if I can't detect bites.... It's poking up so high it's ridiculous.
2) Stupid thing is too heavy, it's struggling to stay above wa-- was that a bite!?! no, it's just struggling to stay above water.

This checks out. Just tested it in the bathtub.
