The Thompson River is closed for salmon fishing, but not for other species.

I would head south of the border. Cheap beer, cheap gas. Can buy a bunch of duty free stuff. Easily offsets the cost of a license.

The trout in the Thompson taste like crap FYI.

Actually, I have found that there are two different shaped trout in the Thompson. One is the trout that are long and skinny with a very big head (snake looking) and the football shaped fat ones. The slender ones have pale meat and do not taste that well, but that fatter and rounder ones have pink/red meat and can be great.
