Thanx , is that as big as they get ? Do we have salmon sharks like the ones they have in alaska?

Hi Hewy,
No salmon sharks around Vancouver, but lots further North, such as in Haida Gwaii. Those things can get pretty big and mean, and when you get into them, it's hard to catch anything else. I have only killed one when guiding and my customers took the meat home and ate it, apparently very good tasting meat according to lots of others I have spoken to. We took one around 4.5ft long, not a big one by salmon shark standards, but still topped out over 85lbs and didn't want to put my hands anywhere near the front end for a while after bringing it in the boat. We got them on everything from herring, to Norwegian cod jigs, and had plenty of salmon sapped off our lines by them, often you get a head back with a surgically removed body, or a perfect half moon removed from a tail section, they'll attack halibut too. We tried dead-baiting for them, but didn't have much luck, did much better trolling for them, ad most often hooked them while trolling for salmon and having them hammer bait out of the rigger clip (also heard of them attacking rigger balls and ripping off people's dummy flashers).
Unless you're planning on eating it, no point killing it, and good luck getting a large fish out of the water and released again without netting it (most would mangle a landing net) or subduing it somehow. If you're looking for the "hero shot" (not a fan of the term), leave it in the water, unless you're somehow (given the territory) near land and can do it like a sturgeon release shot. Otherwise, take it home and eat it !
I've heard of guys finding them off VI too, but can't say too much else. We get a variety of sharks out this way, more than people think, the daily limit for salmon sharks is 1, and 2 possession. Other than salmon sharks and dogfish, I believe it's zero retention of all other types of sharks (it may even be that you can't even target them, but need to check that), I've seen my share of blue sharks (accidental catch) and had a number up to the boat, they're snakey bastards and can double back on themselves while you're trying to unhook them.
Happy hunting !

Thanx, but I just wanted a trophy shot beside the boat , cut it off and let the hook fall out or maybe bolt cutters would be more humane but I think I will need a bigger boat I will stick to the dog fish I'm not looking to get hurt , just wanna check shark of the list lol

I hooked into spiny dog shark about 4 ft long, Van Island .. Last year.. I was out in my canoe with buzz bomb hooking a couple sole fish for dinner around the campfire later that night, when all of a sudden my rod wrapped around my Canoe.. Luckily I had a pair of long needle nose pliers to get it out of its mouth.. About 140 ft from shore in about 25 ft of water.. For only 4 foot long , it put up one a hell of a fight... :)

You can catch small ones off the dock at Crescent Beach.

Are there any dogfish in the Burrard Inlet in the Port Moody area?

Yeah it has the look of a Blue.
I wonder where that Hero who catches Big Sharks off Spanish Banks is these days?
Maybe he's so sore from battling behemoths that he doesn't have time for us peasants.

We used to catch 6 gill at gold river inlet on the island some 16 years ago... those things get huge... biggest one i landed was pushing 10ft.. i thought my cheapo tuna rod was going to snap.
They are protected now from what i hear.

Looks like a blue shark to me. The long peck fins are a sure indicator. And its blue.

Guide said it was a salmon shark - no idea personally...

A salmon shark I netted off tofino. it was not well and we wanted to look at it. Hard football tough fast fish! Not this one tho.(http://i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad287/aquapaloosa/P8140048_zps9dea0d2a.jpg) (http://s944.photobucket.com/user/aquapaloosa/media/P8140048_zps9dea0d2a.jpg.html)
This blue shark we brought into the boat for it was hooked so well. I put on some cotton gloves thinking I would pick it up behind the head firmly to let it go like this(http://i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad287/aquapaloosa/P7310006_zps4bfec62e.jpg) (http://s944.photobucket.com/user/aquapaloosa/media/P7310006_zps4bfec62e.jpg.html)
But like someone said earlier they are very crafty and tho I had it firm in my grip in an instant it twisted in my hand an took a swipe at my shoulder. You can see the look of surprise on my face. Careful with these things.

You can get arrested for doing that to a fish. ;D

Never claimed to be a hero but thanks for the title, if your looking to pick fights then I'm okay with that othwrwise I'm not sure why your trying to stir things up, if you don't believe me that's fine with me. You don't aound like much of a fisherman sitting behind your screen trying to come up with smart things to say to someone who's just trying to help another out.
