You can catch smelts off the beaches with a net. They should be running in June.

You can cast out salmon trimmings on a bar fishing set up and catch dogfish, then scare tourists with them.

No problem, you can definetly get into other fish but not as abundent in that area. I have got into small lings off jericho dock also sole. I like to walk the beach a bit past the pier on the right side and cast out my rig, usualy get something  to bite.

Like Shawn mentioned, you'd be surprised how fished out the area directly around the pier is. If the water's deep enough/tide low enough, I'd suggest walking down the beach a bit and casting straight out as far as you can. Use prawns of sea worms for bait. You have a chance at catching bullhead, flounder, sole, surfperch and Whitespotted Greenling among other things in that area. Good luck!

There are always the crabs. You can also go for shiners with hand line.  :)

Would you guys suggest going at any tide/time if you wanted to get into dogfish?

Post by: Shawn6o4 on April 25, 2013, 06:23:18 PM
I seem to get into more dogs on high tide, but have got the largest ( around 4-5 ft) on a very low tide so guess it depends.
For bait I usualy use salmon parts, scrap chicken or shrimp.

Good luck

R we talking Jericho or Spanish?
I've seen a seal catch a huge salmon fairly close to the beach @ Spanish.
Anyone planning to go there tomorrow (friday)?

Yeah it was big! I was not really expecting it as I was mainly crabbing and casting out a old salmon rod. It was a simple bottom rig setup i usualy use a size 1/0 hook,  if your on the dock cast out as far as you can from either the right corner or the left corner of the pier. But like I said when the pier is fairly busy I tend to walk for a few minutes and find a relaxed spot, if I'm not just there for a couple crabs.

The pier is shut down, no access allowed.  I believe they'll be tearing it down :(
Still good crabbing there though.

The pier has been closed for awhile. I thought it was only temporary for repairs.

The pier was damaged during last December's high tide and storm surge that damaged the Stanley Park seawall. Closure is supposed to be temporary.

I used to fish there as a kid in the 70's before the Jericho beach pier was repaired.  You could only get to it during low tide and had to scramble across rocks and 2 x 4's.  Then you had to fish from the skeleton of the old pier.

It used to be amazing.  Crabbing was phenomenal, and it wasn't unheard of to get a skate, ling or a salmon.  And the flounder...let me tell you about the flounder!

Then in the early 80's, after they repaired the pier, it became a mecca for people who would come down and keep everything they caught.  Totally brutal.

They have also closed most of the fishing off the rocks in West Vancouver (lighthouse park, whytecliff, piccadilly place), and I believe the reason is the same.  People would leave with everything that they hooked.  Completely brutal.  It was like watching a drag net fishery operation.

If you want to have some fun catching flounder, go at about an hour before low tide on west Spanish banks and walk out to the navigation markers.  A good cast will take you to a drop off point about 5 meters from the marker.  Best bait is ghost shrimp dug in the mud flats.  Just watch for the incoming tide...

There are also some good beaches to coho fish later in the summer.

I guess you haven't seen the reports I've put up here Shawn-the ones that are complete with pictures-because as everyone knows without pictures it never happened -just like your mythical monster Squalus Acanthias never happened.

FYI-I have fished the Inside for 40 years now and there's only one place with Dogfish that size and that's Jedediah Island (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/jedediah_is/)-or was because the commercial longline fishery cleaned them to feed  British and dogs that's what Dogfish is good for feeding people with bad teeth and mutts with long teeth.

I've caught dogfish that were over 5 feet off Quadra Island. I can believe they could get that big at Jericho. My thoughts are that maybe all the other predators in that area (rockfish, lings, greenling) that dogfish would compete with for food are fished out. That would leave more for the doggies, thus allowing them to grow larger. Just an idea, though.

I never knew dogfish was edible let alone made into fish and chips in the UK.
All dogfish I have seen caught were released right back into the sea as nobody wanted them.
Does it taste like white fish?

I've also caught ones that size off of Quadra. They were caught on my fly rod from my kayak and that was an experience and a half.

I see them for sale in asian supermarkets, but never tried them myself. Just catch and release.

If you soak them in milk for a while, then cook in a black bean sauce, the taste is very good.  (like a whitefish).  However, make sure you eat the smaller ones because the mercury levels in larger ones is high.

If you go to the steveston boat dock in Richmond during weekends, you can find people trying to sell foot long doggies from the boat.... never seen people buying it..

Does anyone know the current status?  A quick google showed this http://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/portion-of-stanley-park-seawall-temporarily-closed.aspx that says it's indeed temporary.

It's ok it's just that there are dozens of better tasting fish to eat, the flesh is quite dense not to everyone's taste.

BTW-I was wrong when I said that it was Jedediah Island where the biggest Dogfish in the strait were found-someone reminded me it was actually Fagin Island.

In any case I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of these 4 & 5 foot Dogfish caught from the beach off Jericho.

Thanks

Hi cutthroat,

Thanks for the quick response. According to the link, the pier still exists. It's the wooden dock that everybody crabs and fishes off. It's right off discovery road. It was closed for repairs earlier this year. I'm wondering if it has opened up again.

wow, surfperch? Love those. Have you caught any down there recently? High tide?
Like these?
I caught the striped surfperch in locally and the redtail surf perch on vancouver island.

Hello Rod, yes the redtail was caught on the WCVI. Do you know if these are present down here in the lower mainland? They are real beauties, so are the striped when the sun reveals their blue stripes.
