I have also been wondering what is happening with eels.
Eels used for making unagi (Japanese style broiled eel) has almost doubled in the past several months.
I have read that it is due to shortage of eel fries needed for eel farming in Asia.
Apparantly, these eels spawn in ocean and return to rivers to grow (reverse of salmons).
Eel farms have not yet perfected production of eel fingerlings so are mostly collected from wild.
Not many fingerlings are returning to rivers and hence current shortage of eels in the market.
I hope they solve this as unagi is one of my fav dishes.
