Lickman area and down was quite slow this morning. Where are the fish? Water in prime condition.

Buddies and I covered the upper, mid and lower river extensively. Not a sniff for us, although we threw everything at them, including the best possible coho roe and shrimp.
Most people we talked to were complaining about how slow it is this year. Some old-timers who usually have at least a dozen fish by now are being skunked day after day. An avid local I know has even stopped looking for steel altogether until things pick up a bit. He says: "I don't need casting practice, and I can walk my dog without carrying a fishing rod around."

That's how bad it has been lately. ???

Worst return of Dec-mid Feb fish I can remember for some time Milo.   As I mentioned in another post some time ago, when the best local rods don`t get fish, they simply ain't there.  Our spawner counts in April and May will tell the story ...

Same story here Milo. Ive talked to a few guys who live on and fish the river daily with the same story. Worst start to a season they can remember. Water conditions have been very good and while I have already doubled my fish landed from last season   :D, I have to admit, I expected fishing would have been better.

Doesnt mean much coming from me because this is only my second season so my experience is rather limited.

Now i dont feel so bad although I am only 3-0 or is it 4-0 either way
I have not been out much but what i did see and hear is that it has been slow
I need to get out more i guess
I would have thought will all the rain the last few days that the river would be higher, but i heard that it was low and clear
maybe the fish are all in the fast water that is hard to fish :-\

I was out on Friday for my third trip of the year and 2nd cast, right at the end of my drift as the float swung around, Chomp, Chomp on my roe sac. I quickly reeled up, looked at the sac which was torn open, fixed it quickly and tossed it back into the zone. Nothing, next one nothing and many, many more with fresher bait, nothing. Was sure a great way to start the day and even though I fished for 5 hours and travelled some good ground those two chomps were all I would experience. No steel for me so far this year but there's still time.

Talked to a few people and nada for them except for one gentleman who showed me a pic on his phone of a wild one he caught and safely let go. I would definitely say its a slow year but when the weather is as nice as its been nothing beats being on the flow.

Wishing you all Good Luck, go get'em.

It didn't splash you when you let it go, I hope!

Clean and tidy but a bit noisy during execution.   Sadly, as people my age know, sometimes they can get away from you ...  certainly appreciate your concern though ;D

I believe the line from The Bucket List was, "never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on and never trust a fart. "

It is strange, as even though I am 0 for 6 on the fly (I am usually 0 for by this time of the year) I have seen a fish hooked by someone else on just about every trip out, including on Sunday at Browne Rd (I usually don't see so many hooked by other fishermen).  I never would have realized it was so slow.

Yea , for me this is the worst year on the vedder I've had .

I went out for my 2nd trip of the year to the Vedder (have been fishing the island mostly this season with limited success). Truth be told, I was not expecting much even with the water conditions as good as they were. I hiked around the "mid" Lower for an hour and found a nice patch of flow that no one was fishing...until I headed towards it. Someone on the other side met me as soon as I cast in - luckily he stayed put. I worked my way down the short run and missed a light hit. I worked the run another 2x until I had a solid hit. The fight did not last too long, 5 min at most. I landed a nice 12lb hatchery doe. She had some gorgeous roe and plenty of it. Some new arrivals across the river saw where she hit and gave it a go - not a bad strategy I guess. One pulled in what looked like her twin size wise (from what I could see from across the river). For those interested in the gear, I was fishing coho roe (from a very good salt water season), #2 gammy, split shot and a zeppler drennan.

Nicely done JustinG. Great pics as well. Did a 6k walk and cast last friday, didn't see anyone with a fish the whole time.
Only got one on for a couple of head shakes. saw chris on the other side and he had not a lot of success either.

Thanks for the report, alway's good to hear of someone catching something. It's so slow this year that when a person catches one it's like they won the lottery !!! And I bet it feel's about the same.  :)

Sooo true. Just have to keep at it.
I guess similar to the saying in the movie (field of dreams), If you walk and cast, the fish will come.

After all, it is those long fishless days that drive us to get back out there even hungrier!  :)

I thought I would post something positive since my last was rather negative. I definitely got a winning ticket last Saturday.

They eggs were pretty firm, no singles that I really noticed. They cured up quite nicely. Hopefully I can use them on the Stamp in a couple weeks.

Capman, email me at the address in my profile and I can get back to you.
