Steelhead? CHECK!!!
First one Ive ever tricked. Amd with a 2 weight... I played him for 3 minutes or so, and then he was about to get tangled in a stump, so in my attempt to crank him back, I snapped the leader. I will say, my 2 weight actually did fight pretty well for the time he was on. But, I would guesstimate his weight at 12-14 pounds. He did a couple jumps and 3 really awesome runs. I got him about 10-15 feet from shore once, and that was that.
Was a damn good morning!

To bad you lost it that would have been an incredible feat to land a 10 to 12 lbs steelie on a 2 wt. rod.

Yes sir. I was very angry at myself when it happened. On the drive home though, I couldnt help but smile about it. Its unrealistic to expect to land it (within a reasonable amount of time) on such a light rod, and it would have been an ego boost, but I am very happy I got to trick it, and play with it a little at least!

Right on :)

why are you fishing the vedder with a 2wt...
-
If you can't figure out why I'm fishing a 2 weight in january, then I feel sorry for ya.
But to answer your question, was I?

Everyone knows January is Peamouth Chub season.
Sheeeeesh. ::)

I guess the Vedder is the only river in the LML with steelhead... and that all the other rivers that "don't" have steelhead wouldn't have a healthy population of those aggressive little beauties we like to call cutties (and quite possibly the odd RMW and rainbow).
That's awesome Dan. I've had that happen to me a few times - each time was on my 3 wt. To be honest I didn't fight either of the fish, I just pointed at them and broke off as they were on wild only rivers that had low runs and I didn't want to stress out the fish for an ego boost (that isn't a shot at you by the way). Sure feels great to trick em though, and nice surprise when it happens.

I totally agree. If there was no chance of hatchery fish, I would not have played it at all! (actually, being my first, I totally would have... but now that Ive had my first, I would not!)
But yeah, the Vedder is the only river worth fishing on FWR, And I still havent had a Whitefish or Resident Bow yet this year, although I am fishing cuttie water. But still, Whitefish should be around there too.

I can't imagine hooking up with a steelhead on a 2wt, that is nuts! must've been a huge rush.

From earlier this morning, Dan.
Landed on a 7'9" 3wt with 5x tippet and fortunately this hatch came to hand. Let him go though as I was fishing for cutties and I didn't come prepared.
