Title: Chum in the Brunette at BBY Lake Dam
Post by: swimmingwiththefishes on October 16, 2012, 10:46:59 PM
Went for a run today around Burnaby Lake and at the outflow of the dam saw a large number of Chum (around 20) doing their thing.  Neat to see such a large number of Salmon in such an industrialized area. Guess those Smallmouth bass haven't eaten all their eggs.

Was wondering though, a lot of the fish seem to be just milling about at the base of the dam  (I think it's pretty new) and not going up the fish ladder, it's built sort of awkwardly in that the fish have to swim downstream a few metres as well as go down a ramp to get back to the main ladder and over the dam.  They aren't forced up and into a passage like I've seen other damns built. Will they eventually find the ladder or are they just going to be stuck at the base of the dam?

Also anyone else know of or have seen other fish in the river. First time for me.

Tom
