Title: Chilliwack River, October 8th 2012
Post by: BCfisherman97 on October 08, 2012, 08:46:10 PM
Great day today, lots of fish and the water wasn't bad, just had to addapt with the light leaders, small floats etc. But the bozo's on the river are ridiculous. Jack the Ripper come in between me and my dad and tried to fish 3 feet from us! Then started yelling and getting in his face. I got up and gave him my 2 cents, and with the help of another good angler, he was on his way. Him and his buddy said "Let them be, they don't know how to fish!" As there were leaving, We proceeded to hook chum after chum , a few coho's and a bunch of springs while they snagged one fish by the a** all morning. Jigs, roe and shrimp worked the best. Then we left and fly fished the canal, lost 2 coho's and managed a few more chum, water was black with fish almost. Great day and now to enjoy some fresh coho!

Cheers

I was out all weekend the river is stacked!!! the coho were just everywhere! even in the shallow water they were on the bite but the water had to have some nice flow and oxygen. Its amazing what you can run into if you just take a walk even in these crap conditions. Nail size spinners were the ticket for me. Cant wait for some rain and even more fish to come in  ;)

Hello! Thanks for the report.

Can I ask you about your setup for flyfishing; were you using a floating line with a full sink or intermediate followed by a fluorocarbon leader? How long of a leader were you using> Finally what fly was working for you yesterday? I fly fish but have never targeted Coho on the vedder, so if you can assist me would be great especially when conditions are so tough. Thanks in advance buddy!

Natural color muddlers work great.

Last week, I used a clear intermediate sinking line, but I could not get the distance I wanted. So today I over lined my rod and took a 8wt floating line and stuck it on my 7wt rod and real so I can get the distance I needed. Now I had to get down to the fish. So a 11 foot tapered sink tip to a 2-3 foot leader (10 pound butt section and 8 pound tippet). Maybe the 8 was a little light because the line often got wrapped around their teeth. Small flies, muddlers in pink, Kelsey's Hope or something like that? Clouser minnows and just a bunch of little pink and purple flies in size 8-10 that I tied (have no name for them). Just cast, mend, swing, strip.

Thanks fellas and much appreciated. I have a 9# and a WFF line which is great for distance and handles larger fish quite adequately. Your info is very helpful and will give it a try this week.

Tight lines!
