Title: Is the Stave River a write off now?
Post by: brad7 on September 01, 2012, 03:02:11 PM
I tried to stop by the Stave today looking for coho (had a couple hours to kill) and i wanted float fish. And the area is just full of NO PARKING and NO ACCESS signs.
So is this river a write off to drift fishers for this year?

For the next six years actually.

Park some where legally and walk.  From both west and east side, it's probably about 15 minute walk.  Or take your chances and park illegally and see what happens.

Yeah its locked up nicely. I like the "No Parking" signs every 7 feet. They really pound it in. Oh and as Rod said, til 2018.

Oh fic, last time I was there, there was 3 or 4 cars parked within 20 feet of the Ruskin entrance. I laughed pretty good at that. Im sure once the salmon show and people start doing it a lot, there will be tow trucks out and about.

No write off. Looking forward to chums! Last year i parked on the east side just fine. They are putting up additional stalls but with a walk http://www.bchydro.com/energy_in_bc/projects/ruskin_dam_powerhouse_upgrade.html

Alot has changed since last year. They have closed the day use area and have put up a gate down the rode to stop cars from getting to close to the parking lot.

Talked to a local,  Someone knocked down 2 signs and they were put back up the next morning.... The local talked to the traffic authority who was putting the signs back and was told they will be out in force and towing every vehicle they can...IMO if you wanna fish it you better be prepared to walk in, know someone on the river or have a boat.

Hatchery coho release numbers were reduced significantly last year in anticipation of reduced pressure. Although in reality I expect the crowd that will be thinned is the chum snagging group, and the coho/cuttie/steelhead guys will still be out there. Regardless, fewer coho coming in a year or two.

Released last year? Well those ones wont return until 2015 so what does that have to do with this year or next?

Actually the fish released last year would have been 2009 brood and will return in 2012. The 2010 brood which were released the spring of 2012 and will return in 2013. You have to remember that most coho are 3 year old fish which spent 1 1/2 yeras in fresh water and 1 1/2 years in the ocean.

If I'm reading that link right, the whole upper east side is essentially going to be closed to vehicle access during the upgrade. Looks it could be quite a trek if anyone wants to get to that side of the river.

On top of the No Parking for most of the West side, and fencing put in around the new parking lot at the top of that road just before the dam,
The road over the Ruskin dam is closed, The Ruskin recreation area and parking lot is closed for construction as is the road from there down to Keystone rd for parking.
2012 to 2018

Vedder it is boys, lol
