Hey all... so I'm heading up to Birkenhead camp ground for the long weekend and was just wondering if its worth bringing up my lake and river fishing gear? I've been going up there for years, but since I only got into fishing last summer, I've never fished it. Anyone with any suggestions or experience fishing in the river or the lake? Any input would be great, thanks.

In the BC fishing mapbook it has a full page on the river, it says the river has a large freshet, which i would imagine is in full swing by now. However it does say there are large dollies, and the odd cutty/ rainbow in the river. It also closes in June apparently to protect the small sockeye run. If u fish it let us know how it goes. good luck

We usually head up there this time of year, the Birkenhead will probably be high and no vis by now, the lake is very deep and cold, most people seem to troll with down riggers rather than other methods. Not great basically.

I enjoyed fishing for the suckers and pikeminnow last time I was there :)

I don't have a boat which sucks, what's the fishing like off the dock at the boat launch?

Theres a trail along the side of the lake from the boat launch. You can take that to a camping area that also has a creek going into the lake. Fishing from there can be Ok. We use lead core lines and downriggers from a boat when fishing there.

If you have a float tube, blackwater lake just off to the left on the drive into Birkenhead has decent fishing for rainbows- nice lake for tubing

I might just have to go get a float tube, heading down to the states tomorrow anyways.

Definately second Blackwater lake - fished it several times years ago when I lived closer.
