Last week, while exploring in my newly acquired "pokeboat" kayak, I found a tiny creek flowing into my local lake. Paddling up it, dragging my boat over fallen trees and beaver dams, and finally carrying my boat over dry sections I stumbled onto a piece of farmland that appears to have been reclaimed by beavers, swamp, mosquitoes, ticks, snakes, cattails and LOTS of BIG carp. I will mention that this flooded area reminds me a lot of the swamp at Minnekhada park so that you all who know Minnekhada will have some idea of what I was fishing in, however, I will also mention that this swamp I found is 2,134 miles (as calculated by google maps) from Minnekhada, so don't you all start rushing in to steal my spot ;D
Waaaaayyyy back in the old days when I just started fishing, and most of my gear came from the Kmart on lougheed hwy or Jaymers (at their old old location near the Poco city hall), I used to go out fishing with my dad to a green bridge in Pitt Meadows, next to a swampy area (that is now either houses or blueberry), and next to a duck hunting club house and climb down the timber around the bridge and drop hooks baited with corn into the slough... The target fish was of coarse ::) carp, and back then, before everyone loved to chase those golden ghosts, there were enough to keep a young fisher interested and the action was at times fast, and the fish were occasionally big (at least I remember them being big).
Since I didn't want to bring any corn on todays trip, I decided I would see if I couldn't get a few carp on a dry fly... Well, it took a while to figure out, but once I did it was good fishing. The trick was to get the fly dirty so it would sink, and drop it right in front of the cruising carp. If I could get it within a foot of the fishes face, I would either get a take or at least a look.

It ain't no brown trout but it'll do. Got a whole mess of these things sight fished like a golden bone fish ;D Never new you could get carp on a fly.
This guy was a visitor I had on the creek... Something tells me he wasn't as friendly as he looked. You can get an idea of the size of this thing as my kayak paddle is under his belly. I would estimate him to be about 12 inches across the back and definitely in the 15 pound range. A buddy of mine told me that a snapping turtle that big could take a couple of fingers off with one chomp. ???

Nah, I grew up out in BC, but now live in oklahoma for work... don't know that I will ever move back to the lower mainland, but would like to be back in Canada soon. ;D

Ah, that makes more sense, I was wondering what on earth a turtle like that would be doing up here. lol
