Fish for the Future is back in 2012 and this is going to be the TENTH year! Many thanks to dedicated anglers for supporting the event over these years. :)
This year's Fish for the Future will happen on Saturday July 14th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The event venue is still at the No. 2 Road Pier (London's Landing), which is located at the southern end of No. 2 Road in Richmond.
FREE fishing activities for kids under the age of 16! All equipment provided, FREE juvenile fishing licences available at the event. FREE fly casting and fly tying lessons for all ages. Educational, game booths, and much more! No registration required, just show up!
I'm looking for volunteers as usual. We need people to help out with the setup before the event at 8:30am. We need a few bodies to help out kids on the dock during the event (baiting hook, untangling lines, etc). I'd like to keep the fly tying booth going and if the SSBC is interested, this can be your booth with displays and donation jars. We need someone to man the aquariums so the fish don't go belly up under Chrome Mykiss' watch. ;)
If you are interested to help out, post a reply or send me an email at info@fishingwithrod.com. Bring your kids out! :)
If you have Facebook, please go to http://www.facebook.com/events/300107133408011/
Below are photos from last year's event.

Whoo Hoo! Here we go again!

Are we going to Sockeye City this year to celebrate 10 years of this event and are you buying dinner for your guests.? ;D ;D

You won't be able to find out because you have to clean up the Vedder that day remember? ;D

I was coming after it was done for a free dinner or maybe take a cleanup off. ;D ;D ;D
-
Put me down as a tentative yes. I just have to figure out child care as my wife will be out at a wedding shower. My eldest may want to join me but the youngest is only 3 and will be a handful.
-
Sounds good Dave. It'll be good to catch up. Just give the 3 year old to Dragonspeed and let him babysit, he won't be doing too much that day anyway. ;D
-
Still looking for more volunteers. :)
-
Due to a lack of volunteers, this will be my last year hosting this event so come on out and enjoy it while it lasts.
-
Rod i sent you a pm on the other posted site:)

That's unfortunate, it is such a well received event.

Sorry Rod, I would have had I known before today, missed the postings. However I will post your request on a couple of other mailing lists.
lets see what we can do!
edit
Ah, might be able to make it, will be in contact soon.
-
Thanks all. I still need a couple more people to help out with writing up juvenile fishing licences for kids who arrive on the day, a few more volunteers are needed to help out on the floating dock.
-
Bump, still looking for volunteers.
Pacific Angler will be hosting the fly casting sessions at this year's event.
-
I'm also looking for one dedicated volunteer who can take posters of the event to all the community centres in Richmond and businesses in Steveston, and ask them to put it up until July 14th. Please email me if interested. info@fishingwithrod.com.
-
I've been getting a few responses from those who wish to help out at the event, which is great. :) Still need a couple more bodies for writing licences. You don't have to do it throughout the event, you can help out for that for an hour, then help out with the kids fishing, etc.
DFO Steveston has confirmed their attendance once again for this year's event, which is fantastic. RCMP will also be bringing their patrol boat to the pier again.
Just over two weeks until the event! Mark it in your calendar, bring your kids.
-
O.W.L. (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society) which takes care of injured birds of prey in Delta, has just confirmed that they will be at our event once again! Their support is really appreciated and I think it's important to have their presence. There should be lots of bird awareness in recreational fishing as our actions have a direct impact on these birds. I've requested for a bald eagle this year since we've always had owls at previous events, so it'll be exciting to see what shows up. ;)
-
Rodney,
I'll be there for sure. I may have 2 kids in tow (unless I can find a sitter), but i'll be there.
See you at set up.
Dave.
-
Sounds great Dave! :) Bring the little ones, Nina will babysit them. ;D ;D ;D

and you better too, so you get the practce needed. ;D ;D
-
Rod i will drag my wife along :) and she will see if she can find a few more helpers.
-
Seymour Salmon Society from North Vancouver will return to the event again this year with their display of live juvenile coho salmon and background information on Seymour River!
-
I will come down after the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society's second river cleanup for 2012 so you can buy me supper at Sockeye City. ;D Maybe George and Cathy may come too for our annual ghost shrimp adventure ;D ;D
-
Bump.

Hey all!
This is a great event, but it's ONLY made great through volunteer efforts. We NEED people to step up and help. Don't worry about not knowing what to do... You can always work with someone who's "been there, done that" to learn the ropes while you are helping others.
If you can't make it on the day, there are things you can do ahead of time to help out too! Step up. Let's show the world that the angling community can be strong, united and community oriented and not divided, selfish, and in our own solitude!
Who's in?
-
ok rod just so you know Ill be there to help with the fly tying booth.

I will come right after our cleanup on the Chilliwack Vedder but will most likely be all over but can help with take down.
Lets hope the sun continues to shine for both events. ;D

Always showing up after the labour-intensive work is done. ;D Or are you just trying to avoid Bassonator? ;D I should change the event name to "Fish Farms for the Future". ;D ;D ;D
Don't forget to bring the Dutch gang after the cleanup. We're not going to Sockeye City this year by the way, that's too overpriced and not as good as Pajo's, which is the new designated post-event fish and chips gathering venue. ;D
-
Pacific Angler (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/pacificangler/index.html) will be doing the fly casting demonstrations and clinics throughout the event this year.
Berry's Bait and Tackle (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/berrysbait/index.html) will be supplying dew worm and krill for the event once again. We'll also have lots of Pautzke Bait (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/pautzke/index.html) products for people to try out.
We really appreciate the support from our advertisers when it comes to community involvement.

Now that would be a 'must attend' event :D Maybe Chris could help you organize it???
Basso, take it easy on Gadsden as he is getting on and don't accept any of those damn stickers he keeps threatening to put on my truck ;D
Seriously Rod, good luck with this great event.
-
Thanks Dave. :) You should hitch a ride in the Leaf Mobil after the cleanup so you can join us for fish and chips. ;D
-
C'mon Rod, you know there is no room in the LM for passengers :D, but thanks for the invitation.

Well now, you schedule your event on the same days as the river cleanup so you donot have to buy the gas to travel to the Chilliwack as well as get your hands dirty on doing some real work.. ;D ;D
Well you can still buy at Pajo's. ;D ;D
-
Four days until the event! We should have enough volunteers now but if you are still interested to help out on Saturday, please feel free to let me know. Bring your kids out on Saturday, it's gonna be hot so sunscreen and plenty of water is a must.
-
I have a few more helpers for you Rod.
-
I have a few more helpers for you Rod.
How many do you have and what are they interested in doing? I gotta make sure we don't end up with too many so they don't stand around and get too bored... :o
-
Three and if you cant use them , kick em to the curb. I told them that they might be filling out licences.
-
That's great. I think right now we have around 10 people (including the people you are bringing) helping on the floating dock and pier for setting up rods, baiting hooks etc. I may borrow two of them for licence writing so we have four people doing it, in case we get too many kids coming at once...
27C forecasted for Saturday!
-
27C forecasted for Saturday!
Gonna be a HOT one!
-
It will be hot for sure. I'm going to have a big cooler filled with ice and bottled water to make sure you are all hydrated. :)
Volunteers, when you get to the event, can you please park across the street at 6111 Dyke Road. The property owner is very generous and once again allowing us to use their lot for volunteer parking. :) I want to keep the main lot as free as possible for families that are coming to the event.
-
What time do we have to be there again??? Sorry im getting old :)
-
Nina and I are going to be down there at 8:30am to set up tents. Right now Lucky and Chrome Mykiss (well, he doesn't know it yet) are coming down at the same time to help me. I can use one or two more bodies (Funeral of Hearts? ;) ). Feel free to show up anytime between 9am and 9:45am since you guys got a longer drive, that's when we expect all the tables and groups to arrive etc.
-
OK i will try to arrive around 9 ish then.
-
I'll be there for the set up as usual Rodney. Bright and early, and I'll have my 6 year old there with me. She's looking forward to it!
-
Sounds great Dave!
My phone has been ringing quite often starting at 4pm today, people asking about the event. We've never had that before, so we may end up with a lot more kids this year, not sure if that's a good thing or not.... ;D :-\
-
Got quite a bit of media exposure today. We're in 604 Pulse:
http://www.604pulse.com/2012/07/13/hidden-secrets-weekend-plans-for-july-13-15/
Also finished an interviewed with Fairchild TV for our Chinese viewers, it'll be airing tonight at 7pm and 7:30pm in the Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese news.

Hey Rodney, must have just missed you. I was there when Fairchild TV was just setting up.
Looking forward to tomorrow!
-
Just picked up 200 dew worm and 10 packs of krill from Berry's Bait and Tackle. :)
-
Chillliwack may be coming in mass after our event ::) ???, for bugs, plucks, cleanup of your event, supper and then badminton Canadian badminton semi finals at the Richmond oval... ;D ;D
Looks like a full day.
PS may bring you some left overs of our goodies from the cleanup, for your cleanup crew, that is if the G.N. gang does not eat them all on the way down. ;D ;D ;D
Don't forget the steelhead video..D
-
So after six hours of intense work tomorrow, we have to put up with some valley people? ;D
-
Wishing you all lots of fun and thank you to the volunteers who make this event possible. I would be there if I was not heavily involved in a wedding tomorrow though I might get to pop by while we take wedding photos at Steveston =)
-
Speaking of weddings, hopefully there isn't one planned there again this year ;)

lol... ok my stress level right now is already at its all-week high after unpacking rods and getting boxes ready in the last three hours... I hope to see an empty pier when I arrive in the morning. :D
-
Just one last bump and a few reminders about the event. If you are coming with kids to fish, bring chairs for yourselves, it makes a big difference. Please keep in mind that the floating dock has limited space and we would like you to give others a chance to fish if there is a long line-up. Bring lots of cold water, it's going to be hot. Bring lunch, there are shaded area with picnic tables at the front of the pier. Please keep dogs, balloons, whistlers, horns away from our birds of prey exhibition. When you catch a fish, please unhook it with care and place it in the bucket before bringing it up to our aquariums. I'll see some of you in a couple of hours from now. :)
-
12 hours, 6 water bottles, an order of fish & chips and 2 pain killers later... ;D
The turnout was pretty awesome today, almost a little too successful. I was a bit worried about not having enough volunteers to accommodate the crowd but we survived. Four volunteers wrote licences at once throughout most of the event to keep the traffic flowing. We had to ease the line-up for the fishing rods pretty often. In total we wrote up just over 250 juvenile saltwater fishing licences. Adding those who already have their licences and parents of participants, we probably had close to 1,000 people attending the event today.
Many thanks to volunteers from here and FlyBC for making this happening. I hope the pizza and ice water made the labour intensive work a bit easier. :D
We also really appreciate the support from Pacific Angler, Berry's Bait and Tackle, Pro Line Sport, Redl Sports, BC Family Fishing Weekend, City of Richmond, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, RCMP, Seymour Salmonid Society, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.
I didn't have time to take photos but I had photographers doing that for me this year. ;D Here are some. These are taken by LukeYVR's brother-in-law, who is a professional photographer. Many of you may remember Luke, who fished with me pretty often until he passed away in 2009. We actually met Luke the first time at the very first Fish for the Future in 2003 (http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc90/fishingwithrod/2012/DSCF0018.jpg) so it's nice to have his family at our tenth anniversary and seeing what it has become.

Congratulations and kudos to the volunteers and organizers for putting on another great event. One can only imagine the work that goes on behind the scenes in preparation for an event of this nature, but seeing the smiles on all the faces and knowing that you may have sparked an interest in a sport we all love so much is priceless.

Cool video.
Thanks again Rodney for all your hard work. It is appreciated by many in the community.
It was good to see some familiar faces there and nice to meet some new people.

I had a great time yesterday and would like to thank fellow volunteers for making my first attendance with FFTF a really fun experience! Was able to meet and chat with forum members around the bait table including a gentleman with a 5-6 year old daughter, Bojan and a few others including those assisting with helping place fish in buckets, removing hooks and releasing fish. My appologies for having incredible memory for names et all but thank you all! Looking forward to volunteering again next year so count me in to bait hooks!

That's great to hear! It's fantastic to see the smiles and their eyes light up as they learn new things, tie flies or catch fish!
