Title: Fluorocarbon Leader
Post by: hookR on March 22, 2012, 10:46:12 PM
So I'm thinking of switching over to fluorocarbon leaders. Is it really that much better than mono? Some feed back on how it performs for you and brands recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

i have used alot of differnt brands and i find the seagaur is the best all round and for knot strength. and i think it makes a big differnce when the water is clear

+1 Seagaur.

I figure it can't hurt. And I've yet to have a knot slip or it break or do anything weird like get twisted up.

I used berkley 10 lb 100% fluorocarbon as my main line for a short time and did not like it. Too much memory and found it unreliable. Maybe for a leader it's much better though and now I see there is an improved version of it on amazon.

I use fluorocarbon for summer coho fishing when water is gin clear and fish are easily spooked.
Advantage of fluorocarbon in these situations is that instead of using a 6lb mono you could get same effect with a 10lb or even 12lb fluorocarbon.
For winter steelhead fishing, when water has some colour to it, I don't think it is necessary.
Seaguar InvizX is very good in terms of line and knot strength.

I don't think it makes there is much of a difference other than the price

P-Line CFX 10-12# is awesome leader. Whatever gives you more confidence is worth the extra 2 cents

--Ensure you lube the knot before tightening... this is the most common cause for knot failure... often blaimed on the line

I used flora leaders this weekend and they held up fine. I think I'm going to switch to them in clear water but I dont think it matters to much.

Sounds like a burnt knot. Seaguar is not slippery so you have to use a ton of saliva while tightening the knot slowly.
Once tested it should be 100 pct reliable.

i feel that theres no need for fluoro, i rarely use it and still catch lots of steelhead. I always use 10 lb maxima ug for leaders and even in crystal clear water catch steelhead. Its more important to figure out where they sit and theyll hit almost anything if its presented to them. Steelhead are not leader shy fish.

--for sure burnt knot will break...surprisingly easy even slight tug... pre test prior to using.
--in derby two potential winners broke off almost immediate after hook up... same boat... all using leader material from same spool.. tip from derby winner same boat same leader material no break offs.. (WD40) used... doesn't like to spit. I've never tried WD40 but for sure spit as typhoon suggests.
--Derby winner advice to Son... check the knot!
