Title: Coquitlam River Clean Up. FEB 5th!
Post by: BladeKid on January 20, 2012, 02:05:22 PM
The Coquitlam River Clean Up will take place on February 5th, 2012. This is an important day to give back to our local river. From 10am to 3pm come on out and lend your hand at keeping our local river clean and free of garbage. Meet at 10am at the store, bring your own gloves or if you don’t have any just bring you. We’ll supply gloves and garbage bags for you. Please be sure to dress well for the weather and the task at hand. The Coquitlam River Clean Up has been an annual event for the past nine years with the generous help of volunteers and the support of the City of Port Coquitlam and the City of Coquitlam. In years past we’ve removed a tremendous amount of garbage including everything from discarded dog waste in bags tossed into the river to mattresses, sleeping bags, shopping carts, car parts and even fishermen’s waste items like line, floats and bait containers. Every helping hand is appreciated and the river needs you.

On a side note,  the Coquitlam River Streamkeepers will be collecting donations going towards their current project of buliding some much needed Egineered Log Jams on the river, to help increase rearing habitat. The Coquitlam River Dam has significantly reduced the river's large woody debris (LWD) concentrations. Any and all donations would greatly be appreciated.

I've added a poll to this thread. Thanks to Gary and his staff for keeping this cleanup going for since 2004. It's good to see we got one going in almost all the major river systems in the Lower Mainland now. Unfortunately it has to be done but it is a good start to clean up our streams.

I was just wondering why the clean up isn't during the summer.   I would think it would be easier to clean up the river when the water level would be much lower, and you can therefore probably retrieve way more garbage and probably access more of the shoreline.  The turn-out would be better as it wouldn't be miserable out.

Maybe there already is a clean up during the summer?   Also it's the day of the Superbowl!

Pro and cons were weighed as to which dates would be best.

Even an hour or two of your time would greatly be appreciated. Any support, small or big, is still support!  :)

There is no registration, its an open, drop in event.

This river definatley could use a helping hand.  Shopping carts, tires and stripped wire are a few of the regular stuff l find down there walking the dog.  Those are the things we can help with.   Unfortunatley the gravel pits and storm drain runoffs are a bit harder to deal with.  Showing up and cleaning up one single item will leave the river better off,  i encourage anyone to go even if its for half an hour.

Now is a good time to cleanup along the shore as not so much foliage so easier to see and access the garbage in the bush.

I was up Pipeline Rd today checking out that area for the first time in several years. It's sad how much the roadside and river bank are used as dumping grounds. I almost ran into an SUV with a Christmas tree on top on the way out. The guy must've been looking off the side of the road for a good place to dump it. Sure, a Christmas tree doesn't do any harm but the guy probably makes trips up there all the time to get rid of stuff. I'll be there to help out but it seems kind of futile to have to do this every year. We pay taxes to have our garbage picked up, pay fees for disposing all the other stuff that doesn't get picked up and then have to volunteer to pick up after morons who have no respect for our environment. I'm sure the amount of illegal dumping skyrocketed when the City stopped the annual Spring pick up. Any brilliant solutions out there?

Great you can help out. No easy answers unless the government takes a harder stance by clamping down on these people that abuse the environment day in and day out.

We can only do what we can to keep some of our rivers clean the best we can like many of us do on the Chilliwack Vedder River where we have taken 72.87 tonnes off its banks since we started the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society in 2001 where we have held 33 cleanups. One could imagine how this river system would look it all that amount of garbage was still there. Unfortunately some fisher need to do a better job of taking their stuff away too instead of just dumping it on the ground.

Yesterday I cleaned up about 50 pounds of garbage left by the Hydro Bridge on the Vedder, piled in the riparian zone, to be washed down river during the next high water event.

Good work to those putting on your cleanup this Sunday and good on you for helping out too. Lets hope for a good turnout by users of this river.

Check out the CVRC's web site at www.cleanrivers.ca if you want more information on our Adopt a River program.

Oh, come one now.  There is lots of room left in the gyre.  What's the harm?

What is bewildering is that a lot of people on that beach probably don't even notice the garbage.

Excellent turnout at the Coquitlam River cleanup today! Half of the people had already left to the river when I took this photo. :)

This was our haul in the morning. Most of the volunteers are still out until 2:00pm.

Many thanks to Michaelt for getting the word out and Gary for putting the event together.

Global tv noon news had a report on the clean up ...cameras showed the many people...interview with one chap told of plastic from th 6 pk beer cans..even sleeping bags in the water etc...
Coquitlam is within the top ten BC rivers that are threatened by pollution the reporter mentioned.

Looking at Rod's pic ...with that line up outside the tackle shop made me think that passerbys driving by that busy intersection may assume there is a BIG SALE on !!!!

I'm in the photo  ;D Count 6 heads over from the left side of the doorway ... blue jacket with grey collar and ball cap on  ;D Was extremely impressed with the turnout and the haul of garbage. Way to go everyone! I plan to help on the Chilliwack and Squamish cleanups too.

Is great that the clean-up was a success.
Is too bad they still allow all that silt to spill into the river.
There are ways to stop it but money gets in the way.

Was a few people out to help clean up all the crap that the white trash of the area tossed out. Having lived in PoCo foe 15 years during the early 80s to mid 90s I was shocked by the amount of garbage around there now. I thought Surrey was bad :-[

On approach to the sign up spot
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a391/troutbreath/DSCF0475.jpg)

I ended up by the hachery area where some people enshrine trees with garbage.

Came across his freaking structure.

I guess the idea is to replicate the trash shrine

I got a good part of the trash out.

Lots of hard work to clean up what some losers throw over the bank. Next time i'll bring a winch.

You come across camps of homeless people up and down the Coquitlam. Unfortunately, some of them simply abandon them when winter comes.

Final count of registered participants of this cleanup is 264! :o Quite a few people didn't register (Nina and I didn't) because the line-up was too long and we were not that interested in winning draw prizes. ;D

The garbage above was just what was cleaned up from the upper reaches... the lower river was equally bad, and perhaps worse with the amount of tents and needles recovered.

Awesome! Another pic with me in it  ;D Also, that's one of the bamboo root wads I picked up. It's not just "garbage" that is a problem, bamboo and cherry laurel, among other non-native invasive species, are spreading all over the riverbank. In most cases it's easy to determine the origin - just look across the street at the house and garden.

But not big things like tires, table or sometime even computer i saw it at the cap river 2 years ago. It is sad.
