Title: Primary Hook Color - Red, Black, or Silver
Post by: therise on January 15, 2012, 10:14:55 PM
I have always used the standard silver hooks, but I see lots of guys with red ones out there. Does it make a difference? I can see the benefit if it matches the bait (ie red roe). Your thoughts?

You should have included one more choice: Whatever

I think hook colour is irrelevant.

I've used every color and don't see any difference, have caught fish equally on all. Gamakatsu makes a cool hot pink hook too, I don't think fish are picky with color but it looks neat having say, the pink worm match the hook

I use black hooks if the water is low and clear, otherwise any colours go

black or silver, i use black hooks more when its sunny or bright so the hook doesnt flash, but really it doesnt matter, back in october i saw a guy hammering hoes using pink hooks.

I use black or red never silver. I like to have the hook hidden as much as possible and  try to stay away from flashy colors. It should be like the hook isnt even there. be nice if gamy or owner could make clear hooks "STEALTH HOOKS" id buy em...

I think colour is not really important as the size of a hook.
When water is clear and low and fish are pressured, going with a small hook and presentation helps in many cases.
Red or black works fine, but I have not really used silver much so can't say about that one.

I only use black hooks. Color does matter but not to the fish, it only matters to the angler and how it gives them the confidence to catch the fish.

Colour does matter. Whatever makes you confident. Gun metal or black for me. :)

Colour doesnt matter as long as they are black.

black gives the angler confidence, red is matching bait color, and silver is adding some sparkle and attracts fish attention.

I use whatever color available.  it just doesn't matter.

The only time I pay attention is rigging sockeye squirts, the black hooks always out produce.
I've heard of guys just using 2 black hooks in tandem.

Red colour basically disappears once you are down a couple meters underwater.

Hooks made out of glass are the best imo..  ???

I use blacks but really don't think it matters.  Black is more readily available in the hooks I buy.

No biggie to me, some days I catch them, some days I don't. I don't think the hook colour is whats making the difference imo

HHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
Although I've used them all...
It's the one's I can FILE to the best ( sticky sharp) point.
And that's where it becomes your preference.
Use, sharpen, use, sharpen, use sharpen, discard when it's beyond...
You can re-use a hook an awful-lot (particularily when it doesn't even know what a fish is... :o)

HOW MANY OF YOU RED HOOK GUYS HAVE ONLY THE SHANK WITH THE RED COLOR?

People use and reuse (to death) any given product.
Did you sharpen?
What?......
I have to retie a leader and attach a hook?

The point doesn't stay sharp forever?

I've got a wack of stainless but it doesn't rust away;
I use it sparingly these days (considering the cost).

I think alot of people dont fish enough to care about hook colour, but I still think if you want to get #s up there you have to be confident in what you use, I have seen fish move from black hooks only to stay put when a red hook flows towards them, I think red is far more natural in a piece of roe or a prawn or wool than a black or silver hook....and I dont carry a file around, if I think the hook is slightly dull I throw it out....and really your hook shouldnt be pounding rocks on the bottom, if thats the case your not fishing steelhead properly.

Some brand of hooks seem to sharpen better than others especially when a high quality sharpening stone is used.
I have been using gammies mostly as they sharpen very well and I do recycle my hooks as I tend to change my leaders often.

If youre using a shiny silver spinner it might be a good idea to use a shiny
hook. If you use worms a darker hook may be better. Might not make a difference but thats what I would do.

Silver. Biggest fish I caught was on it! Or, just what ever is on sale at the time ;)

what brand of hook are they ? there is alot of crappy hooks out there for cheap. I stick to gammies and owners for all my fishing. I use red and gun metal black. always red gammies but i cant always get red owners so i get their black ones instead. when i used to fish with Eagle Claws i always used black
