After reviving the fish, it wasn't bleeding as bad as when we took the photo.
That picture was right after hook was removed.
once revived the fish was very lively and took off with a burst of speed
i have faith that the fish will survive another spwan.

Fish are inevitably going to be hooked in the gill or a spot prone to bleeding.

I'm sure everybody here that has caught more then a dozen fish has released a bleeder.  ::)

None of the people here making comments were there.

Best ya can do is gently release it, which you did.

x2 don't be hard on yourself, there's nothing you probably could've done.  Sometimes their just hooked bad and the law requires you to release them anyways.

No matter how careful we are, it's inevitable that a few fish will end up bleeding more than we would prefer.
Nice looking steelhead! :)

I would not worry to much. There does not seem to be too much blood and like you said you revived the fish and it took off with a burst of speed

I am sure that there where at least a few bleeders this season on the Thompson and those fish are a species at risk and that is where people should be concentrating their remarks at as this fish although it looks like a "wild" fish was a hatchery produced fish and was produced for catch and release purposes unlike the fish from the Thompson that are purely wild and at risk. So for those people that want to leave a negative remark, think about all those poor fish that where pin-cushioned on the Thompson this year and then think about what remark you now want to leave.

So Brian_the_fishermen that is a nice looking steelhead. Way to go on the first of the year for your farther. I bet he had a huge smile on his face after this one. What a christmas present that was.

Fish in general are much tougher than we think. How many fish you & I have caught in the past with bad seal bites and still aggressive enough to go for our lure/bait? Nice fish and thanks for posting.

Hey jim why dont you post that awesome vid of the sturgeon you dragged up over the side of your boat by the tail!! How quickly you forget eh ??? ::)

Sturgeon are pretty hardy fish, I haven't seen the video personally so I don't know what exactly happend. But sturgeon can be out of water for a very long time and can swim off after a lot of stress and still recover. Nice fish Brian! Hopefully it wasn't too bad. Good luck to everyone this season and I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Cheers

do you need an environmental assessment of you lead contaminated property? I can have it done for you !

really , you think that steelhead lived ?
after many years of tagging both types of fish I'm pretty sure what will live and what wont.

if you don't want razzing don't post pics of wild fish bleeding to death.

prove how much blood came from that fish! He said his dad cut his finger MR EXPERT ::) If thats the case then ban fishing period! I have released more then one fish in my day that was bleeding but hey if you stab something with a sharp pointy thing  do you not have a 50/50 chance of drawing blood?

Brian, nice fish again. I wouldn't worry too much about what has been posted. In a discussion forum such as this, you can gain some useful information, but you can also attract some unwanted comments. After spending some time here, you'll figure out who you should befriend with or who are simply self-centered individuals seeking pleasure by putting others down. Keep the reports coming, for those who haven't been able to get out (like me). ;)

Still not understanding what he did wrong here. Correct me if I am missing it but it seems some have taken exception to the fact there is a wild steelhead bleeding? Or is it the picture of the fish bleeding? As far as I know that is just the chance you take while fishing, after all we are ramming a hook into them and dragging them to shore. Is there something he could have do e differently? Probably not short of leaving the hook in but you don't always know a fish will bleed if you remove it. Some seem to be angry it was sent on its way but bleeding or not we are legally obligated to RELEASE all wild steelhead. Did the OP take care with the fish? As far as we can tell yes(kept in the water and revived it before letting go) Maybe some here using lily pads and magical gum drops as these rarely hurt the fish compared to hooks
