Title: Where the heck do I find list of BC's record fish!?
Post by: fishman254 on December 18, 2011, 12:47:20 PM
I'm having a devil of a time trying to find a list of the provincial record fish (biggest fish ever caught in BC per species). Help! Not on the Env. Dept site as far as I could tell.

I appreciate that, but doesn't the gov't collect that data somewhere, for all species?

It would be great to see what the largemouth and smallmouth bass records were.

--BC does squat but complain that fishing license sales are down... Check out http://www.travelmanitoba.com/Wilderness/Fishing/MasterAngler/&node=6004  Manitoba master anglers program and you will see what could be done... Also note besides bragging rights most trophy fish are released.

--the Manitoba government seems to embrace angling and promote it, knowing the value of the resource to the province.

Skaha, that's a great program!
I note the "weights"  ;) of the fish are in centimeters (ie there measurement is LENGTH, no weight). That's for catch and release purposes. The International Game Fish Association has a new length category too, and it's for catch and release.

Master Angler

Manitoba is home to the oldest master angler program in North America, 50 years and going strong. Last year alone, more than 10,000 trophy fish from 30 qualifying species were caught and recorded - and almost 90% of those were released!

Your Own Official Record
Every qualifying Master Angler fish you catch is honoured with a certificate recording your success. A unique certificate is given to those anglers who catch-and-release a trophy fish. Set aside a special place to display the highlights of your Manitoba angling adventures.

The Sign Of Things To Come
The Manitoba Master Angler Catch-and-Release shoulder patch is given to those individuals who release a qualifying fish. The growing number of patches awarded each year is a strong sign of anglers' overall commitment to ensuring the future of our fisheries resource. Approximately 90% of the entries registered in the program are released by anglers, up from 65% in 1991, when the program first began tracking the percentage of fish released. Start your own catch-and-release practice by earning the one-time Catch-and-Release patch.

This is what I found for Chinook Salmon:

The current sport-caught World Record is 92 pounds (42 kg) and was caught in 1928 in the Skeena River (Terrace, British Columbia). some were found dead at well over 100 lb. The commercial catch world record is 126 pounds (57 kg) caught near Rivers Inlet British Columbia in the late 1970s.

That might be the *BC* record, maybe? Since the WORLD record, according to IGFA is 44.11 kg (97 lb 4 oz)   from the Kenai River, Alaska , USA, 5/17/1985, by Les Anderson

I hear you on that one! Yes, take wiki with a huge grain of salt.
I wish IGFA had British Columbia's records, but I don't think they do.

nope they don't :(......one thing I do find a little odd/surprising on the IGFA site though is that their world record White Sturgeon is only listed at 468lbs, caught in California in 1983.......now I would imagine that the only reason why a bigger one caught out of the fraser has not beat that is maybe because its pretty hard to weigh on an official scale when its a catch and release fishery.....but surely before it was c&r there had to have been much bigger ones weighed in!.....must just be that no one decided to register any of larger size with  the IGFA?

--IGFA has some state records but doesn't have BC or even Canadian records.. I have asked them several times as this would cause a great deal of business for Canada. (which may be why the USA based IGFA may not be interested)

--IGFA vs world records... even the all line class IGFA record has specific rules on how it is determined thus the largest sport fish caught may not necessarily qualify.

--AS IGFA running out of records you will note they are coming up with different certificates such as catching fish of 3 different species within a % or current record etc.

--Records and certificates are not for everyone but for many they add to their enjoyment.

I remember one Fred Helmer caught in the 70s was over 800 pounds and had over 150 pounds of roe in it.  Sad those eggs never made it into the beds.
