Nice to see they tranq'd him and caught him before he fell to the ground instead of blasting him.

Why would they tranq a bear in the middle of downtown van, and when there was a cougar at one of the ferry terminals very early they would 9mm its face. Lack of publicity? I cant imagine a cougar would be more of a threat at 4 or 5 AM on the island than a bear IN DOWNTOWN.

Glad he was saved though. He will now tell all the other bears of the magical land, AND SOON WE WILL BE OVERRUN!

I for one welcome our new bear overlords.

Glad he was saved though.

Saved? Hardly. Sending a 1 year old urban bear up the Squamish valley at this time of year is a death sentence if ever I saw one. Bears should have been well into hibernation by now. IMO the COs didnt want the bad reputation of killing a bear in front of the public. We all know how many badly informed / educated wannabe environmentalists live in this city, its just not a PR battle the COS wants to start. A quick scan of the public comments on the Sun website is testament to the ignorance of these people.

A chance for survival is a hell of a lot better odds of living than being killed on the spot.

Starving or freezing to death over the space of a few days is probably a lot more painful than being dispatched by a professional who is trained to minimize pain and suffering.

Well..... there should be SOME fish carcasses around that area to fatten up on ::)
If not then it's Darwins theory!!!!

I think they did what's right , can't please all the people all the time .

Bears should have been well into hibernation by now.

I agree with all you said, except this.
Bears here quite often do not hibernate, and if they do it is periodical. It's not cold enough.
Saw this guy on the stamp last weekend plummeting into the water catch coho on the redds.

He was healthy... not starving and therefore not hibernating.
