Title: Need some rod advice on an Okuma Celilo...
Post by: Jewelz on December 08, 2011, 03:00:12 PM
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this rod before? I got an early xmas gift from the the wife, its a Okuma Celilo 10'6" Heavy/Slow casting rod. I'm just wondering if I should return it and maybe get a different one. It was only about $50 and I might be able to put in about the same, but maybe I won't have to. I just want to use it as my float drifting rod. Any opinions?

I'm currently looking for a rod for my friend and with a budget of $100 I mentioned to him to go for the Shimano Convergence 10'6. At the $130 range are the Fenwick HMX which i can really vouch for as she's held up to BB for Fraser River socks and Drift on smaller systems. She's a 11 foot medium-heavy rod and still holding up even after 2 seasons of heavy abuse.
I guess for now just find out the store's return and exchange policy and upgrade before the deadline. Don't know too much about the Okuma Celilo rods but with the specs you have, it should be perfect for drift fishing...

I was looking at the Convergence rod, its a really good deal too. I was looking at the Fenwick Canadian Methods rod also and that its a good deal as well. As you can see I've been looking for a rod that is under $100 taxes in. Unless there is a rod that is significantly better then the ones mentioned for just over $100 that I have missed...

I have the 11 foot celilo trigger rod, i only bought it cuz it was real cheap and i wanted a rod for sox. to be honest the action is very very slow, not my preference at all. I wouldnt give this rod a very good rating, i would go for a convergence, ten times better, i have used them many times, in trigger, and cp format. My opinion anyway.

It is really really stiff. I'm not a huge fan of that aspect of it either. I think i'm leaning towards returning it back to the store. The Convergence is only another $25, I can swing that.

I had the a 9 6,' 6-12 Okuma Celio for about 3 years, i loved that rod, until i snapped the top piece in half a month ago while tailing a big beauty coho.  Great for the $, light, cheap, reasonably strong backbone.   I used mine for a spoon chucker.  Better rod than the convergance IMO, and the Fenwick feels like a meatstick to me.

X2

To close the deal, a warranty:

Perhaps call customer service on the bottom right hand of the web page and ask them if it's only a "One Year Warranty" or a "Limited Lifetime Warranty" for the Convergence rod. I'll be picking up the rod soon for my friends wife. I'm sure he'll be pretty happy come midnight Christmas Day.;D

Ended up getting the Okuma SST rod. Held both the Convergence and the SST and just liked the way the SST felt. Plus the copper colour just called out to me! Thanks for the everyone's input. Going to test the rod out on Wednesday, hopefully break it in a bit  :P
