Title: Food Truck at Tamihi
Post by: James on November 13, 2011, 04:13:06 PM
I was wondering, if anyone that makes regular trips to the chilliwack river , has seen the food truck parked at the tamihi creek entrance . ?

He used to hang out at Lickman Road and Tamahi. Good having him around, serves as an extra set of eyes on those thinking of breaking into parked cars.

thanks .

i was just asking out of curiosity .

i am a hospitality student and red seal chef ... I was contemplating a business venture regarding a food truck for that location(s) .

It seems to me , as a local fisherman for the most of my life , that there are a couple opportunities in the fraser valley for that type of service .

any thoughts from the community here ?

thanks : )

I've had the same thoughts!
...however its a large capital outlay for short peak season. Not sure if you could get a license from the city either...

Coffee and a warm meal for lunch while steelheading sounds great. You could also sell common tackle (floats lead hooks)

coffee and warm meal is always great to have close to the river , people wouldn't have to drive into yarrow or chilliwack just for a quick bite befor resuming fishing . first light breakfast would be nice too .

Licensing is not a problem , finding locations to operate is the problem.

I found that there is almost always people on that river , wether it is fisherman or public crowds in the summer months . Plus you can always change locations / rivers / etc . There is always a peak season somewhere .

The food truck should locate itself based on the water level and where the fish are of course. ;) Tamahi bridge, Lickman Road lot, Keith Wilson Bridge would be my choices. ;D Beside having hot food available, it also provides eyes that can look out for car thieves and tire thrashers. ;)

that is true ... follow the fish . and there will be fishermen/women .

I am not sure what the interior fishing crowds are like in the kamloops and hwy 24 areas are like . but that is another area i would like explore possibilities .

my idea is not for a traditional , panel truck tandem axle enclose food truck . More of a 4x4 capable truck with a food cart in the back ... but NOT a hotdog style cart . difficult to explain . Breakfast options would be important to offer .

I just want to be able to get to locations no other mobile food vendor could .

Would be nice if you had wine and beer as well as food.  Probably against the law but the money would be good.

You do need some kind of cart that will allow you to cook while shielded from the elements.  Decent hot coffee would be nice.  You could also sell fishing tackle (to those that run out and need something in a pinch) but don't stock betties if you know what I mean.

If you happen to run into him, tell him Matt (from Port Alberni) says Hi, and to give me a shout before steelhead season over here! Haven't seen him in a couple of years now...

Cheers & TIA!

Not that it is a big deal but the fellow that was at Tamihi for a couple of years lives up country. Met him 2 out of the last 3 years while I was hunting around S.B.

after a quick number crunch ... it seems i would need a average of 50 customers a day ( working 16 days a month) in order for this venture to be worth while . otherwise it would be better left to someone who is retired and just needed a some extra cash and something to do .

i have food and beverage costs figured out as I was a manager for a local breakfast franchisee , so there is no issue there . transportation costs per day is a biggie though .

thanks for the discussion so far , it is nice to hear . :)

X2

Seems there are a lot of people against it (Jeff if you go on my FB you'll see why lol)... mostly just sent out reports to the people that took time to email me.
Might throw up a quick one at some point in the near future.

And yes Dennis old enough to drink, just didn't see anything near the river driving between Spences Bridge and Lytton.

The problem with a food truck is the location.
You cant just park it at Tamahi on the side of the road.
They will shut you down just like the last guy.

Roadside vending is not allowed anywhere and unless you can find a private place to park then your sol.
Like they say,location is everything.

Used to be someone at Chehalis too but they ran them outta town too.

that is true .
but you need to get the proper permits and liscensing . which is definetly possible .

it is a hassle , because each municipality has different permits and rules , so a person needs to be aware or they will be unable to operate .

for instance , to operate in surrey , I would need one permit and a health inspection

to operate in chilliwack I would need another permit and another health inspection

getting inspections and permits is time comsuming , but cheap .
