Ok guys, I'm ready to get drilled, but I really need some help here.
Me and a couple buddies are going to go the the Thompson on Saturday. I have never been there, and would really like to give it a try. I'm assuming we will all be gear fishing at this time. So I'm just wondering if anyone knows any access points or could recommend somewhere where I could find some (maybe maps, can you see any on google earth?). I don't want specific spots, there will more than likely be 4 of us covering water running different things, so we would like to do a lot of leg work and not sit in one general area.
So is anyone willing to give up some parking/access areas? Please email me at steelheadfishing@hotmail.com or feel free to post and help others out if you want. And before you start drilling me, I don't even want to hear it, save your posts for elsewhere. My only weekend home and if I need to I'll drive around most of the day but would like to have at least one stretch we can cover.
Thanks guys,
Cheers,
Dan

Dan, the thompson is a huge river and intimidates many first time anglers. It is a treat to fish even if you don't hook anything. If you look for where the cars are parked along the hwy. you will get a good read as to accesible water. A good starting point is the goldpan area there is good water both upstream and down. If i can help any more email me at carpent@shaw.ca enjoy the experience

Just remember, the rocks are very slippery so put cleats in the soles of your wading boots if you can.
-
Also remember a pair of diapers because you will Sh*t your waders when you start fishing your first run and realize its bigger than all the water in the Chilliwack put together.....and your are supposed to find a Steelhead in there!!!!
-
It's a big river all right but look for steelhead water and you can find fish. Just break the river down like you would any river and start working the fishy water. Access for most of the river is pretty good. Roads run along side good chunks of the river and you will find parking pretty easily. Some spots take a little driving to find but Google earth is your friend.

I have slowly worked my way up on big water. Stamp was intimidating at first, but if you look at it and look at easiest route you can easily find fish.
Just about covering water, which I'm confident in doing for the most part. I'm not really expecting any fish, just excited to hang out with buddies and explore a new area!
Thanks for all the info guys! Much appreciated, especially to those who sent me detailed emails!

I only fished for steelhead once a few years ago on the Thompson, with the Master. Caught one on my second cast so they must not be that hard to find. ;D ;D

You must purchase a classified waters license. And steelhead tag but assume you allready have one. Vedder rules dont apply either, give any other anglers lots of space, if you see a guy at the head of the run fish above him dont ever cut in below someone or be prepared to get thrown in the river, not even joking...

There are many pools where fish will rest from their journey up the white water. But I agree with hue-nut, water is very intimidating at times. Have fun but be safe. Rocks are very slippery and I have seen a person die in the summer. Never gonna forget that. I slipped in the river twice and one time I was lucky I got out. Have a blast and I wish you the best of luck.

PLEASE replace the oversized stock hooks (ie: 4/0 Siwash) with smaller ones (2/0 Siwash), in my experience, large spoon hooks very often lead to extensive bleeding. There are not many Thompson steelhead, so loosing even a couple to hook wounds would be very unfortunate. I have not found landing ratio to be noticeably changed by downsizing the hooks and you're more likely to be able to bend out the hook if it snags up. I've never opened up a 2/0 hook on a fish.

As Zach said, K4 Wobblers are a spoon made by Gibbs.

Dont bother, the river is a shadow of its former self. Shouldnt even be open with such low numbers returning.Just glad i got to fish it during the glory days. ;D
-
the thompson will never be a shadow of its former self, it is a gorgeous magnificent body of water that we in b.c. are privileged to have, yes the steelhead run is a shadow of what it once was, but there is so much more to enjoy about the river, the scenery, the wildlife, the other species of fish, i have fished the thompson for many years sometimes hooking numbers of fish, and sometimes hooking none. i will continue to fish the river as long as i can and encourage those who haven't to do so maybe if enough awareness is raised something can be done. i can't wait to get back up there and fish again, and bring home some fresh sage that grows the length of the river.

Nice post and great attitude.
While positive thinking alone (without action) may not lead to progress, it stands a far greater chance of influencing others to act upon a cause than negative thinking.
-
I think the negative, is hordes of anglers flocking to the T to pincushion what is left of a once great run.I find sadness in that. These last remaining fish need to spawn unharrased by the so called Sport Angler. You can fight to save the fish in other ways.
-
your missing the point Dennis, if the T remains closed for to many consecutive years then some/most people will start to not watch for openings or notices about whats going on for the river and its fish/wildlife and this is what would really be the bad thing. Without people willing to care for a certain system it will just get forgotten all together and then things will become very bleek because the powers that be will also stop caring without people constantly on their case. The people that want to fish this once great steelhead run are the same people that send emails and do charities to raise money, there is actually an auction/fundraiser for the T next week at a bar here in the lower mainland (somewhere downtown i think) lets be glad we have something like The Steelhead Society so that someone is keeping eyes on the systems that need it. I say if we have openins for a C&R fishery then its a good thing because most of the fisherman up there will be the same very people trying to protect it and overall save it from extinction.
Would i fish it ? i certainly would and if i had seen the opening before opening day i would have headed up for opening day and fished a couple days. Do i hope it opens every year ? its hard to answer that but im 50/50 on that one lets say. If it opens next year will I fish it ? I hope im able to but with a young family it makes longer day or multiple day trips alot harder to do without previous planning ::)
and if i do fish it i will be fly only and not using heavy tips to dredge up fish, I rather fish a type 8 tip or lighter and have the fish crush it instead ;D
-
Unfortunatly not all who head up there are as caring as you about the resource and ethical angling methods.Yes, there is an upcoming fund raiser and as im not able to attend I will be sending in a donation for this great cause. It seems to me in this instance the desicion makers have bowed down to pressure and opened this fishery with only a projected 600 fish return. The old standard was an 800 fish return to have an opening.Dreadfully low numbers, and believe me the sports angler are doing these so few fish returning no favors by pincushioning them before they spawn. All this talk on the internet, such as ED asking for information on the where, is just advertising this opening to the masses. This is a very fragile fishery and cannot take any undue extra pressure.
-
Good post the carp and Hook, there is a good side to this as there seems to be more fish than the projection, I say no more, today. ;D ;D ;D
Ah the carp, the smell of the sage is enough to make one go there too. ;D

No one argues because of what you are holding! ;D
Almost made it back to the river today, last minute change of plan. ::)

Yes you are correct. ;D
None there, just like other years. ;D ;D

Starting to sound like the Vedder! Agressive anglers that think they own the river.Shameful that this behavior has now come to the T. The only good I can see of this sorry mess,is the local town of Spences Bridge benefitting from the influx of tourist dollars.
-
geez! All the negative stuff? You'll have a good time, I'll bet you'll hook a few, looking forward to the pictures. You'll know where to fish.

How ???are the roads?

Dan,
what about taking hwy 1 up? I'm pretty sure it faster.
p.s. nothing stops the focus.

some of us care no matter if it ever opens again.......i kills me that posts like this "I'am concerned about the river"....BUT "if I would have seen the opening the day before I would have gone"
sad state of affairs, again I will say the main reason we are losing these fish is GREED.
-
With regards to highway conditions, it is snowing throughout the Coquihalla Pass. Better to take Highway 1, looks like once you reach Lytton weather improves dramatically. Longer drive, with no snow, but you will not need snow tires.

Great post Jim. I cannot believe the mentality of some of these "concerned anglers" who advertise the opening alll over the internet and race up there to get thier licks in.I would like to see all the sports anglers, for we are the only ones who value these fish, band together and not fish this opening and hold some sort of demonstration along the the banks of the T to get the attention of the decision makers.Look at the power of the people getting the Keystone Pipeline project put on hold.

How your roll would change if the power of the people stopped the Environmental Travesty taking place in Fort Mac!

Guys like this?
Are you saying you're better than someone (pretty much everyone I guess in your mind) because you decide that you will not fish the Thompson, and therefore everyone should follow your lead? Get off your high horse dude.
I asked a simple question. A bunch of people helped me on an open river! If you don't like it, too bad, it's open. I'm not expecting a fish, if I hook one I don't plan to fight it for 20 mins and drag it up the beach, I plan to treat it the way I would any other steelhead. Steelhead such as the ones on island rivers, that have runs just as small and sport fishing doesn't seem to effect them much at all. If you want to start a lobbyist group (seems to be a common trend right now ::) ) Go after the commercial netting and native nets (and moron's bb'ing that kill them), they do much more damage.
Btw, I'll do what I want as far as posting pics, a report, etc. Hell, if anyone in my group gets one (once again not expected) I might even do it just to annoy you even more to be honest, nice big pic of a beautiful steelhead right into this thread. I'm not the type of person that respects the high and mighty that think their way is the only way.
I respect the fact that you care about these steelhead and want to protect them; but to tell me and a couple buddies to leave them alone when we just want to get out for a day on the weekend for the one time a month I come home, to explore some new water and just have a fun trip.
PS Maybe read the original post, where I didn't even say I was targeting steelhead (for all you know maybe we are going for bull trout and rainbows).
Secondly my very first post said before you start drilling, I don't want to hear it, save your posts for elsewhere. Seems some people can't read....
-
Lets try to keep this discussion civil, I know we all get carried away and I am guilty of this too as we are all human and say things we should not, be it on the HST and fish farms but we gain more by respecting everyones opinions and have a better fishing forum for us all to enjoy.
My opinion on this is we gain more, by having it open even though there could be some draw back that others have pointed out.
My thoughts is as soon as a system is closed people start to loose interest in it and it degraded further as development and other harmful factors take hold. I believe we know what they are. We have this fund raiser for this system being organized and its tributaries taking place, this will raise money to hopefully improve the chances for these world class fish to once again flourish.
An opportunity to fish helps people willing to organize and contribute for a cause like this.
As another thread said there was some unhealthy activity between some people but that happens on all rivers and in other aspects of life not just in fishing.
My Remembrance Day 2011 message to all that may read this and agree or disagree.
-
Yes, alot of passion on my part regarding this issue.I have taken a beating over it.Its okay,I have big shoulders and will continue to express my opinion to anyone who will listen. Those Island streams you talk about ED with small populations of steelhead, do not see a fraction of the amount of anglers that are pounding the Thompson right now.
-
will any of you be at the ssbc fundraiser on the 23 ?
-
Probally not Jim. Thier too busy fishing the Thompson.Take,take.take and never give back. I cannot make it as im working out of province.I will be sending a donation to this great cause. Any one else going to step up to the plate?
-
With out any sport anglers there would be no one to care about the river and its fish. This is the first year of returning fish of the cycle since they closed it to sport fishing for the first time ever in history, and to be honest it doesn't look like its gotten any better. Sport fishers are not the cause for the demise of the fish, plain and simple there is no arguing that. Commercial & FN nets, warm water temps in the tribs, lack of water withing the mainstem and the tribs, off shore ocean interception, salmon farms, etc... A guy putting a hook in a fishes mouth does not kill it, yes there is mortality but its 3 pecent. For every 100 hooked 3 die, if the run is 1000 then 30 die if all of the fish get hooked (which they don't) Each thompson doe contains approx. 15,000 eggs. x about 550-700 does = 8250000 - 10500000 eggs. Considering how ocean survival is on the up swing of things, the survival number out weighs the death toll. Now if a fish get wrapped up in a gill net.... it is stone DEAD, if it has lack of oxygen, its dead. This whole shut down the river to the sport anglers who put in thousands of dollars into the economy in gas, fishing liscences, tackle, hotel rooms & food in order to some how recover the run is a hoax. When you have all the other causes like ranchers and commies etc. who don't care 1 bit and are causing the majority of the damage, but they get free rights to rape and pillage. (obviously not purposely, but they are causing a demise to the fish) The thompson run get absolutely destroyed coming around the south end of the island in the chum fleets as well as the lower fraser if they give an opening and in the fraser canyon by the FN nets soaking. Who is to know what, where and why they aren't recovering. Steelhead for lack of better terms aren't even being managed, in comparison to pacific salmon by the province. Enjoy...
So... go fish, figure it out, find the spots, use whatever you want (within the fishing regulations), because anglers on the river is better than off the river, catch a couple fish and have fun.
See you on the 23rd...
-
untill we all say WE are a part of the demise , we will not get anywhere.
WE all did it now we ALL have to fix it.
