Title: Elaho/Upper Squamish River, October 30th 2011
Post by: cutthroat22 on October 31, 2011, 11:25:12 AM
Highlight of the day - 7am, cold, pitch black and pouring rain.  I see an odd shape moving as I'm close to the Elaho Bridge.  I realize it's a guy mountain biking with a beer in one hand.  He flags me down and in a heavy french accent says "hey where is the party?"  I think it took me about 10 seconds to comprehend the situation and I told him there are no parties everyone is sleeping.  He is very dejected and asks over and over if I saw "the campfire."  I tell him these roads lead to nothing and he seems to think they go to Whistler.  ???  Couldn't convince him to turn around back to Squamish.

Fishing - caught 2 dollies all day.  Didn't target any salmon and also didn't see any in one of my favorite Elaho holes.

Exploring - spent a few hours trying to track the owner of these hoofprints.  Picture doesn't do the sizing justice that is my size 11 boot beside the tracks!

Good luck trying to walk down a Roosevelt elk. Wary as all get out. Hope you weren't hunting as elk are not open.

There are a ton of elk trails on the Mamquam, Indian Arm and Pitt if you look hard enough. Unlike blacktail deer elk tend to follow the same routes so the trails are well worn. Word is there will be a limited entry hunt opening within the next 3 years or so.

Just trying to hunt them with a camera  ;)

I was sure it was an elk track at the time.  However, when I arrived home, I checked my track book and it says elk tracks max around 4 3/4 inch at most.  These were a bit larger,  maybe 5 1/2-6 inch so who knows...moose maybe.

Re eagles: didn't spend much time in the Lower Squamish and none around Brackendale but I did see about a dozen above mile 29.

I saw them same tracks - HUGE - on the lower Squamish, even below the mouth of the Cheakamus. It looked more like moose to me but I think it is almost impossible. Yes, there are moose in the upper Squamish. And there is a group of elk on the other side of the river at Fisherman's park, at least in summer - probably 15 animals or so. I have seen them a few times earlier in the summer.
As for eagles, quite a few of them around also on the lower Squamish and Cheakamus.

May be Rod can tell us where moose are located.  He tends to 'run' into them quite often.   ;D

One of the best eagle-viewing areas in Brackendale is the Squamish dump near the Alice Lk turnoff down the Squamish Valley Rd.  Sadly with such poor chum runs on the Squamish, it will probably provide the most stable food source for the birds.
