Would like to try the Stave tommorrow by boat. Was wondering if there were any number of Chum available? Thanks in advance to helpful fisherman.
Paul.

Good action on the stave for chum, but you gotta fight through all the BB and snaggers. Heard rumors there are gonna close the chum due to poor numbers on the Harrison and Vedder. After seeing the gong show of people being proud of catching a fish with 8 feet of leader I kind of hope they close it.
-
When you guys talk about the Stave, are you guys refering to the mouth at the Fraser or near the Dam or some other area of the river? Sorry for being such a newb! ;D
-
Anyone gotta guess on how the water will be tomorrow?

From the mouth to the Dam. No fishing in the spawning channel near the dam.

Fished the west side this morning on the falling tide. Fishing was quite good, numbers at least "appear" to be better than last year but still nowhere near what they have been in years past. I imagine the rest of the river was also fishing well, and with a boat there are plenty of places where you can fish by yourself. Even from shore you can find lots of space away from the crowds. There was a fellow way downstream from where I was, in a spot I've never thought of trying and he was into many fish. Just because there's a lot of pressure in one place, doesn't mean the fishing's better....just easier to get to.

Where exactly is the spawning channel? Is it the part that breaks off from the main river just south of the parking lot to the east and runs right beside Hayward St?

The part that you mentioned is open, it is the channel that Rod highlighted, from the dam side down to the boat launch, that is closed.

I have heard parking is an issue. Where can one park that is walking distance to the river? Another map like Rodney's is mega helpful.

go early....
-
parking can be an issue on the ruskin dam area, i always see people park randomly along the main road instead of the parking lot be sure to pay attention to the signs on the west side of the river. Tow truck driver would have mades tons of money if he bothered to checked lol, many people were parking in the no parking area. :-\
other than that i managed to keep this chrome chum after fishing for a few hours. buttloads of people fishing yesterday!

I too went out for a while, had to go somewhere closer to home because I had practice later in the day. Managed about 30 chum, and my dad slightly less. While walking down river as far as I could to get away from people, I saw that almost everyone who was fishing the bowl caught coho. Walked down to my spot and noticed chum rolling everywhere. With the tide comming in, there were plenty of fresh fish. First cast on a blade, nice chum, still had sea lice and a white belly but had these orange scabs on it's body so back he went. Switched over to a jig and had a fish on every cast. Fished about 3 inches from float to my weight, with about 8 inch leader. Water was nice and deep and these fish were inhaling everything, I've never seen chum this aggressive. Anyways, landed about 15 chum like the one posted in the picture above. All but 6 had these orange dots on their side ??? I still have no clue what they are. Has anyone seen this before? Both my dad and I retained 2 females, still chrome with lice. It was nice to see the few guys I was with fishing with had the same setup as me. One guy was flossing and I got him to rig up a float and jig and started nailing the chum, he was surprised to see the jig on it's tongue every time. At one point I put on one of Every Days roe flies and started hitting them on it. Over all nice day.
-
Lots of fish on sunday with a jig. Fisheries and CO's checking everyone when hydro came in to clear the parking lot. Kinda funny watching people try to ditch their catch when they got to the parking lot. They even checked me and I wasn't packing any fish.
-
Sorry fellas for asking but is the Stave closed for Chum retention? Also where can we legally park?
-
you can keep 2 chums, or 4 hatchery cohos, or all together 4 salmons.
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/fresh-douce/region2-eng.htm
as regarding parking for the west side, sorry, I don't know.
Just learned that from Oct. 27 on there is no retention for chum.
-
I'm not 100% sure where is absolutely legal, but when I start to get concerned about getting towed on the west side of the river, I'll park way down from the trailer park, on the west side of the road and completely off the pavement. So far, so good.....
-
Went out yesterday and yes, they were biting my jigs on almost every cast. There is no good reason to bottom bounce or snag when the fish bite so agressively.

Agreed! They are very aggressive fish! I'm just hoping that now they are closed for retention they gong show will move on and open up some shoreline to keep enjoying them for C&R only.
-
Those of you who will be out C&R-ing chum on the Stave, please do so with the utmost respect for the fish.
Also, please please please, act as true stewards of the resource and prevent the ignorant individuals who don't even bother to check the in-season regulation changes from bonking fish. You'd be surprised how many of those you can encounter in one day.
I sure as hell will keep my eyes wide open on the flows I'll be fishing this weekend.
Tight lines.
-
I'll second jigs effectiveness. I went out twice in the last 2 weeks. I found a nice spot on the westside not a far wade from the bottom bouncers. Walked in and both times 1st cast fish on!!! Any jig with a purple/cherise or purple/chartreuse colour worked. I tie my own and have my own killer jig. Both times out 20+ fish in a couple hours. I even had old timers chucking blades or wool come over a see what I was using. Fun times!!! I always C&R as I don't use roe. Caught some nice does when retention was still open. Let them go to help rebuild the run.
-
Please note that some of the reports have been moved to the fishing reports section in case you can't find the posts.

Nothing better than the look on people's faces when they are dying to bonk an old boot and you're releasing a chrome doe. I don't know how many people questioned my sanity and suggested I give the fish to them!

I hear you there! Get alot of WTF looks for sure. ;D Not to mention endless texts from my roe-slinging buddies.

I always offer people my fish, provided I can keep the roe.

Is that legal? I guess providing they have a license and counts towards their retention total?

You can give a person a fish but technically they are supposed to have a letter from you with all your info on it.
-

I suppose it's no different then giving it to a friend or neighbour or something when you get home, it just somehow seems a little different when you're at the river.
-
If you catch and retain a fish it is part of your limit. If you give it to someone who is not at their residence then you must provide them with a letter.
-
I have no experience with this, but do rivers usually become less crowded once the retention of salmon is not allowed? I was on the Stave on Wednesday and it was pretty packed (person every 30ft or so), im assuming it was because it was the last day of Chum retention.
-
30ft?? That's a luxury for the Staver River, there's extra space left over beside fitting two 10.5' rods in there. ;D
Typically catch and release fisheries receive less pressure, but since there are other species that are open for retention (coho salmon), it just might be as busy as before. That being said, it is now wetter and colder, which is usually a big factor when it comes to thinning out crowds.
Have a good fishing weekend everyone.

I have the type of question as Jewelz. Will there be many people fishing the Stave tomorrow, given that there's no Chum retention?
Second question, I've never fished the Stave. Which side do most go to, west or east? Please don't reply to go and look for yourself, I'm not asking for key spots, it's just a general question. Thanks in advance.
-
The east side is usually the busier side as it offers more parking options.

Depends on the kind of fishing you are going to do.
Float/Gear is good on both sides, but is better on the West Side IMO.
Fly, The East side has better slower water to fish, but the West side has some GREAT water down closer to the Trailer park if you are chasing Coho.

When I was there the east side of the river was way busier. But if you don't mind going for a little walk, park on the east side at the dam parking lot and then walk across the dam to the west side.
Another question, there was no one fishing in the stream that is just south of the boat launch, is there a reason for this? I know that north of the boat launch is off limits, but not the south. Does this just have to do with respecting those fish that are heading up to the spawning channel?
-

There are many guys fishing the side channel that you are talking about to the East (Or south) of the Boat launch. Today there were 5 guys in there at first light, and I have also fished in there many times.
You do want to try to be a bit careful though, I try my best NOT to enter the river as the side channel is FULL of Redds.
Also, you can park on the west side, there is a park about 400-500 yards down stream from the dam on the west side that you can park in.
Rick
-
I was there this afternoon. from what I can see less than 10 people fishing on both sides.
-
Thanks for the replies guys!!! :)

How far is the dam from the turnover off the Lougheed Hwy ?

I think you're speaking of the Ruskin spawning channel... its closed to fishing.

about 3-4 km.

about 3-4 km.
Thanks, much appreciated.

The spawning channel is above the boat launch, not below.

Stopped by yesterday for a while and hooked in to some very nice chrome Chum, so they are still coming in fresh. Sadly, I had to remind a number of people that were about to bonk old boots that they were closed for retention. That is despite there being a huge sign at the entrance noting the change in the regulation. I also witnessed far too many chum being dragged 10 feet up onto the shore before being kicked back in, pretty disappointing behaviour and no DFO around to do anything about it.
-
good day fishing from the boat, lots of very bright chum and a couple wild coho.....oh and lots of rain this morning

Yes, it was indeed wet. I was into a few small jacks and a very feisty bright chum that put on an aerial display that had me thinking big coho until I caught site of it up close. Had the whole area to myself for most of the morning until another fella came by to cast spoon or spinners for a while. An orange Fall Favourite produced many small jacks but a Chartreuse pattern produced a few too, and the chum as well.

I was checked by an officer last week when I walked in the parking lot. checked my license and the catch. they are there but not all the time.

Went to Stave this afternoon, with the nice weather, there were a number of people fishing, talked to a few, there were a couple of wild coho caught and released.
-
Hi all, joined this forum couple weeks ago. Soon found out that most have fake fishing names, but i cant seem to change it my profile. Oh well.
Anyway, went to Stave sunday afternoon and had lots of fun catching chum doing short float with a jig. Thanks to Rod for his easy to follow short float article.
I tried flyfishing too, but only caught one chum using a sinking tip in medium speed water. Any advice on what i might be doing wrong?
Also had a nice chat with a scottish spey-casting guy. He comes over every year from scotland because they have 'nothing like this' over there =)
I'll be heading out again this friday and will try for some coho.
-

I'll be heading out again this friday and will try for some coho.
Find slack "frog water" for coho and fish a clear intermediate sink tip or a floating line with a weighted fly and a long enough leader to reach the bottom. Cast and let the fly sink to a couple of feet off the bottom (I like to count the time it takes to hit bottom and then shorten the time on subsequent casts). You want the fly just above where the fish are holding, so you avoid foul hooking them but are close enough to entice an aggressive chaser out of group on the bottom. I have found chartreuse has worked good at the stave, but orange and olive are also good choices if that doesn't work, and tie in a little flash (crystal flash or flashabou). When fishing moving water, dead drift a roe fly or other egg pattern, like a nymph, using a strike indicator and a small split shot to get the fly right down into the zone.
-
I read somewhere (maybe on this forum, just can't remember) that to increase the chances of getting a fresher fish to bite, to keep your presentation a bit higher than normal, so as to entice the fresher more aggressive fish to bite. Is this true? Is there a way to improve one's odds of hooking into a fresher fish? If so, how much higher? I'm asking this because when I went to the Stave for the first time on Saturday, I hooked a lot of Chum, but maybe only 1 or 2 out of 15 or 20 were somewhat fresh. I'd certainly would like to target fresher fish, if possble. I was short floating with a jig. Thanks in advance.
-
There aren't many fresh fish in there now so your odds aren't good. Last weekend I caught fewer chum than the guys I was fishing with, but didn't catch a single one with rot and foul hooked far fewer fish.
Spoons, spinners and flies are snagging machines when the chum are this thick.
Best fish were caught in slower water with jigs set at least 4 feet off the bottom. You still need to be careful on the retrieve to avoid the zombies.
Fuschia/pink/chartreuse will trigger aggressive strikes from fresher chum. I was fishing silver blue to try for coho.

I was at the Stave with a couple of buddies today. We got to the river (East Side) around 6:45 and started to fish Just after 7am. We fished the toilet bowl and the Back channel.
My one buddy and I used fly, and the other buddy used small gold spinners.
My buddy with the spinner did really well hooking 6 Coho, but due to lack of fishing experience, lost ALL of them (including one Jack). My other buddy and I got into a few Coho and MANY chum (at least 50% Bright & Clean & 80-90% were hooked in the mouth) but again were not able to land one Coho today. Funny, last Friday, a different buddy and I went out, hooked about 20 and landed 15, today 0-7 between us For Coho!
Saw a few Coho caught today in the toilet bowl as well as the main channel, but the lack of respect for the Chum was ridiculous!!!!! I don't know how many people I saw landing a Chum and just dragging it on shore and booting it back in!
I LOVE fishing in the Stave year Round, but with what I have been seeing in the last few outings (It seems to be getting worse) I wish they would just close it totally!!!! These poor fish don't stand a chance.
Tons of Coho in the River, but you really need to know where to look and what fly to present to them. We also found that a faster retrieve today was the ticket, last week they wanted it slower.
Ohh just a FYI, the one guy that did end up doing REALLY well on the main channel was using hand peeled Shrimp!!

Hi Franky, welcome to the forum.
Not all of us use fake fishing names. There are some great people here who choose to use forum handles, but most of us with nothing to hide and at ease with who we are and what we do use our given names.
Welcome again and let us know how your coho fishing goes!

I really hope that it closes again before we do too much damage to the fishery.

Thanks Milo for the welcome, and to all for the wealth of info. Yes, thats really a bummer with the Chum opening.
On friday, i'll be bringing out a few friends who have never fished, and was thinking of letting them try the flyfishing. Since it'll likely be crowded, we'll drift fish for the safety of everyone!

Tomorrow I plan to go to Stave River. Anyone can share the spots along the short river? Eastside or western side? Is the parking close to the Dam on the east side? If arriving there at 1:00pm, where is the best place for parking? I fish just for fun, not for keeping them... Thanks! :)

I also wanna know if there are fresh coho in there now
not interested in chums...

I have a question that is more related to salmon behavior. It it's a stupid question I'm sure you'll let me know as is usually the case on FWR ;)
My understanding.. (loose analysis)
Salmon are born then they head out to sea for a year or 5 depending on the fish then they re-enter the river and spawn where they were born then roll over and die..
So if they are in the stave wouldn't they always be in a poor condition because they are there to spawn and die? I say that because they aren't just passing through because the stave is a dead end no?
Another question.. When I was out last weekend they were surfacing, splashing and jumping like mad (as in one fish full body out of water 9 hops in a row).. Is this indicative of spawning behavior?
Set me straight!
-
salmon cycle, yes they are going to the stave to spawn and die, to pass on the next cycle, average of 4 years. some less some more. The fish jumping is spawning behavior. Sometimes you will get a fresh run fish that is eatable. I find it is alot to do with the way you target the fish. Fish lanes where they travel this time of year. Fish short, with a good presentation and you will catch fresher fish. The fresh fish are often only a day or two out of the ocean they move quick, the old fish spawning out have been in the river for awhile it is best not to harrass them. Might make good soup...hahah. or good in the smoker.

So a completely fresh looking fish can also be ready to spawn and die?
-
So a completely fresh looking fish can also be ready to spawn and die?
No. What' mikeyman is saying is that fish entering rivers from the ocean will remain fresh for a couple of days before they start colouring up. It may take a couple of weeks, or more, for them to colour up and become ready to spawn in rivers.

So they could just hang out for a couple weeks in the stave prior to doing the deed?
-
So they could just hang out for a couple weeks in the stave prior to doing the deed?
Yes, this is typically true of "early run" fish that enter the river ahead of the run and then hang out while they await a suitable mate. Fish entering the rivers later, tend to switch over sooner (in a matter of days) as prospective mates abound but time is running out. These fish must put on their game faces quickly to compete with other fish already in spawning colours.
-
is going to head out to the stave will give a report when home :)
-
lots of chum still, and some very fresh looking ones, though as the couple beside me found out yesterday they can be super clean this late but often carry loose eggs only
probly my last trip, chum fishing is fun, but unlike my coho persuits I usually go to populated spots.....
Man people have no manners regarding those around them or fish landing skills, though I met some nice people as well and collected a ton of lost gear so its ok lol
-
where did you fish? and yeah seriously lots of nice looking chum and there are still coho to be had there and fresh too. Got this beauty today....but i really think stave's coho are no fun, this one just floated sideway and let me pull her in until she saw the shore and started to play a bit.

Went out today for an hour, lots of people bonking everything....Caught a few chum, they did look fairly chrome but something seemed a bit off about them, had really "rough" feeling skin, not like they were as fresh as they appeared. Also a few in a row all seemed to have seal gashes on them.

Good music for making sauce for that boot. If you don't get a fresh one, drown it sauce. ;D

Went to Stave on Fri and Sat. A lot of chums, only one fresh... all others are pretty old... but it's fun... even my kids learned a lot for fishing during weekend...
-
I Went out there on Friday for the day and landed about 10-12 chums. Nothing worth keeping but had a great time and got to practice playing and landing fish. BEst day of the season for me so far.
