I've got a trip planned for the vedder this weekend, but I'm not sure what gear to bring.
My preferred method of fishing is on the fly, but I'm not so stubborn that I'm willing to give up good fishing just to fly fish.
Can you fly the vedder successfully? If not, should I bring spinners and spoons with a spin casting rod, or roe/wool?

Bring it all, and use the best method that suits the spot(s) you're fishing

I figured that was probably the best plan. Thanks, I was just hoping someone would say there was some magical lure working wonders that I should bring. I can hope.

I have seen people fly fishing in vedder in this week , however I did not see any of those caught fish, maybe current is way too fast and fly fishing in such water is diffcult I guess.

Personally I like to bring two setups when I visited the Vedder. It's usually a centerpin and a spinning outfit, or a baitcasting and a fly outfit. I rarely fly fish (because I like to catch more than less, and since I am not so good with the fly in river... ) but have seen fly fishermen doing very well at the same waters that I prefer to fish (slow, shallow tailouts). I like to float fish with roe by using my centerpin outfit and after awhile I like to switch to the spinning outfit so I can work the same run with a spoon or spinner. If one method doesn't get them, the other usually will. If both don't get them, then I usually make a move.

Bring a screw driver so you can switch your American license plate out and swap in a temporary BC plate. The American Tire Slasher is still out there.

Hey this is just me but I made a trip out to the vedder a few weeks ago from the Island and I fished only fly. I dont like bringing more then one rod because then you have to carry the other one around and look after it, and if you hook a fish someone could walk away with your other rod on you. If you are going to fish with a fly rod bring some t8, t9, t12 tips or some poly sink leaders and you should be able to pick up a coho or two. If you fish the side chanells, slower water, and tail outs with a mickey finn, christmas tree, coho blue or some muddler patterns you should hook into some fish. There is also coho holding up undercut banks and root sections in shallower water then you might expect.

Bring some bear spray just in case. You get attacked buy an angler. ;)

Sorry to say we don't need to plan on what to bring. Four of us were planning on making our seventh yearly trip to the Vedder on this coming Sunday but the "slasher" got us. No one wanted to risk bringing their truck and getting it vandalized so we will go steelhead fishing in Idaho instead. This was a trip we always looked forward to and really enjoyed the scenery, people and fishing but just can't risk it.
It seems that this slasher must have something to gain to be doing it widespread and risk getting caught. I could better understand the break-ins and stolen gear for money but what is gained by vandalism and if it is truly only that then if I was a Canadian I would be worried when this action turns upon you. We called the RCMP to get an update and were told that there was nothing they could do. We asked about temporary plates and everything else we could think of but they more or less advised us to stay home.
Good luck up there and hope things are resolved for next year.

Sorry the slasher is keeping you guys away. I know for sure I would be extremely PO'ed if I'm shopping down south and come back to a vandalized car. By the way, did they ever catch that I-5 shooter targeting motorists?

to Iron nogin and milo I think the two of you have explained the veder very well but like true gentlmen you are kind in you'er choice of picts , I would almost dare to say it is far worse and only halousogenic drugs and a combat survival course coupled with a flame thrower could ultimatly prepare you for what you are about to experience , but thanks it brought a smile to my day , but I fear I will now be reminded of that dreadful place :o

I have yet to have a negative experience on the Vedder & I'm there almost all of my days off from dawn till dusk. Avoid the crowds, use common sense and treat people with respect. It will be returned. Most guys instigate their own problems then exaggerate the outcome.

i have had a good experience at the vedder. Most are friendly, treat them with respect and you will get the same. There was one instance(few weeks ago) that i ran out of roe and and i approached the guy if i could have a small piece , but instead he gave me his full bag of cured roe.
