Title: Stave River, October 9th 2011
Post by: Sinaran on October 09, 2011, 09:29:11 PM
got off work early and decided to hit the Stave river for the first time today.  Got to the river by 11am, cars were parked alongside the west entrance. Guess one of the "no parking" sign was torn down by angry flossers  ;)   There were only 5 fishermen on the west side, and nearly 20 flossers in between.   I started floating jig near the entrance, the first hour produced nothing.  Switched to blade, fish on on the second cast, guess what, an old and dark humpy~ back it went to the water quickly.  switched back to jig and on the very first cast, float took a quick dive.  After a timely hookset, a rather good-size fish was on the other end of the line. :)  about two minutes later, first chum of the season was landed~~  an OK condition doe of about 13 lbs.  Released, as i didn't plan to keep any fish today.  Around 3pm, another fish was on but it lasted only a few seconds, gone along with my precious jig... so i just packed up and called it a day.  Next week we should see decent number of fish in the system, hopefully we will see more fish than flossers then!

there was an interesting sighting on my way out though..  when i was driving along 287th. toward Hwy 7, i saw a bear crawling across the street, toward the residential area on the westside of the river!! :o  I know black bears frequent that area in the late autumn quite often, but this one was in a bit of a hurry maybe.  i reported this to RAPP, as this might pose threat to the nearby residents.  We just gotta be aware of fisherbears here on this river i guess ;)

I was there very early yesterday.    There were a few chums about and I thought I would definitely manage to get one on with a jig - I had one take down which I missed and nothing for me after that.   Apart from one guy who got a nice doe next to me they were pretty tight lipped.

I think yesterday was one of those rare days when nobody was resorting to dicey techniques - no long leaders, everybody dead drifting their floats with Roe.  Some small jack Cohos caught and a dolley.   For once I was surrounded by fishermen who were truly fishing, on the Stave of all places :).

To think that I stumble around in the dark getting to my spots  :P the thought of bears about makes me queasy.    I guess I will carry lots of jingly bells on my person in the hope that I won't surprise one in the pitch darkness.

I was as well, I saw a mixed bag.  Saw a few using floats in the bowl, but they were dragging the float back rather than letting it drift.   As for the bears and bells, you do know how to tell the difference between Grizzly scat and Black Bear scat don't you?

I was there today, did not see the bears out on Hwy 7 but I saw then on Friday.  Had one chum on that I lost.  Some guys were getting them much more regular.  I did manage a 6lb hatchery Coho which helped an otherwise slow day.

Too many bears at the stave, much safer to go to the vedder.

Depends on where you go.
Bears are all over mid/upper river.

I'm not all that worried about the bears - it's the cougars that I occasionally see strolling down the street beside the trailer park that have me worried...  ;D

The 2 legged is more dangerous. They take your money and then kill you whereas the 4 legged variety just kill you.

Saw some clown bottom bouncing with what appeared to be a tennis ball sized weight, not sure what it was but every few minutes I would hear this big "PLOP"

The insane thing is, in the area I was fishing, I was the only one catching fish, biting ones at that. There's always a few good people fishing at the stave, but there are also some of the worst.

What exactly do you mean by kicking field goals?  Are they kicking the fish??   I would kick their my buddy if I saw someone doing that.  That's just wrong, abusive, disrespectful, and borderline psychotic.

My following opinion is probably going to far, but if this gets worse out on these rivers, I feel they should just close them all together to Salmon fishing.  I don't fish for them, because I feel that they need to be left alone to spawn.  I have respect for our salmon, I guess.   Plus they are relatively hard to catch, as they're not interesting in feeding.  And I especially don't see the point in catching old Salmon that will soon die.

Wouldn't kicking someones my friend for kicking a fish be wrong, abusive, disrespectful, and borderline psychotic as well?

exactly, I also always wonder to find any difference there.
There are always better ways to approach those ignorant people and showing even worse ignorance is one option.

geezzz... I was exaggerating.   Someone kicks a fish should kick a swift kick in the @ SS.   So what.

no.  How's it wrong? How's it abusive? How's it disrespectful?  How's it psychotic?  If you saw someone kicking a dog, you wouldn't react?   I guess not.  You think it's ok to be selective of which animals can be abused by humans?  It doesn't matter whether it's a bird, fish, cat, dog, deer, bear, or whatever.  Another living thing is another living thing.  And no person has the right to inflict pain, abuse, and mistreatment on a defenseless creature.

In my humble estimate, I think people who kick fish back into the river deserve what comes to them, short of bodily harm of course. I can never understand why some people inflict more suffering on the fish they hooked as though they have some kind of vendetta against the caught fish. However, I don't think it is an irreversible situation as some people are simply doing it out of ignorance and possibly could be taught.

Personally I didn't see anyone kicking the fish in the river today but I was on the bank with most of the guide boats, which Im assuming know better. It was a gret day though, I probably caught about 15 fish, including a couple does that had spawned out already. Great day out, just really foggy in the morning driving up the river.

just wait another week or so till the rivers around are loaded with chum youll see them being booted back in or thrown in an dragged way up bank and kicked in killing them or being picked up by the gills for a hero shot with a moldy snagged salmon

Wow...that's unreal.  I've never been by rivers during these peak fishing times to witness all this behavior.  I've heard lots though.  I can't believe people do that.  Exactly...moldy Salmon...leave them alone already people!  Ugh I'm disturbed and kind of mad now.
