Title: Non-tidal Fraser River, September 18th 2011: Scale bar and Vedder River
Post by: silver ghost on September 19, 2011, 10:59:42 PM
Thought id head over to see if I could get my two last sockeye of the season. The fishing here was the best it was the entire season hands down...and I caught no sockeye!!! can you guess why? I counted 15 people there at one point on Sunday, myself included. Couldn't have been a better day at what is usually a gong show of a bar, I had noone beside me for hundreds of yards. I got tons of pinks but released all of them. FN were out doing a beach seine so I thought i'd walk over to check it out...they had upwards of 400 fish in a single set they did at the south end of the bar. Of those fish only 6 were sockeye, 3 jack springs and an interior coho - which I was happy to see released, although not properly - picked it up with thumb and forefinger right in each side of the gills and threw it about 20 feet in the air. fish went belly up, I ran over to it to see if I could revive it but when I reached out to touch it it whipped it's tail and was off, hopefully it made it. I was happy to see it released, but wondered what the fate of him would have been if I wasn;t standing there observing...maybe to a 'social ceremony' with the rest of the fish that are meant as FSC?

Anyways, after realizing my chance of getting a sockeye was close to 1 in 100 I left for the vedder.

I had fun with a few pinks, but most of the ones I had caught have turned, and was surprised to see some of the fish people were keeping! Brown, black, multicolored, humped out to the max but according to everyone "good for the smoker" lol, had a few good laughs. Didn't see any springs or coho, just lots of pinks in the lower section, I fished around campground. All in all was a fun day with plenty of pinks caught, but nothing worth keeping - even for 'the smoker'

I too had fun on sunday at the Vedder. was short floating a jig and the pinks loved it. The good thing is that springs like the jig also. Caught and kept a 15 lber that was really fresh, must have raced up from the ocean. Friendly people all around so that added to the enjoyment.
This is a good time to show new fishers how to get a fish to bite instead of endlessly hooking fish in the back while bbing. I had a few people ask what I was useing and I converted them them from BBing.
