Title: Tidal Fraser River, September 16th 2011
Post by: Rodney on September 16, 2011, 12:44:28 PM
After seeing some encouraging signs yesterday in the evening incoming tide, I eagerly got up early to catch the morning high tide today. Fish Assassin and I fished together from 7:30am to 10:00am. Quite a few fish moved through between 8:00am and 9:00am but we only hooked a fish each. He landed a big male, while I lost mine after a few seconds. Signs of fish disappeared once the tide started to go out. The Southeasterly wind remains a challenge when trying to get your lure out to where the fish are.

At least a dozen fish for me out Abbotsford way using both flies and spoons. I tried out a new custom spoon today and caught fish on the first 4 casts.
One of the fly caught fish was a chrome doe with lice, all the rest were riper.
The guy beside me probably caught twice as many as me and most people were getting into fish.
Fished incoming tide from shore from 9 until 11:30.

Fished the incoming tide and the flood tide this morning. With the wind blowing I was glad I had my center pin with me as well as my fly rod. I set up with a pink jig under a Drennen and set the depth for 6 feet and cast into the usuall fishing lane. After 5 min down went the float and after a quick battle I had a 5lb doe on the beach.  After another 20 min a bigger doe pulled the float down and after a much longer battle I had my 2nd fish. Too bad I had to leave to go to work, it looked like I'd get another two fish pretty quick. It looks like the females are coming in now, and they don"t porpoise and roll as much as the males.-almost no signs of jumpers where I was.

thanks for the report Rod - at least you briefly got to fight one!  Are the commercial guys still out and about? is today their last day of the opening?

The seiners were extended until Sept. 23, but will be monitored closely. I guess it won't get much better for Pinks than it is now. Those large modern boats have pretty sophisticated sonar and zone in on the schools quickly. I was in Richmond this morning and landed 2 and lost a few more. Most fishers were into a few fish and landed 1 each before the bite died off. With the commercial openings, I guess that may be as good as it will get. ???

Made it out to Brownsville again today after work.  Fisheries (not a CO) was there asking questions about peoples catches and scribbling some notes on their clipboard.  Didn't touch a thing and with about 30+ guys spread across the rocks and beach only saw 2 landed.

Fished the low slack tide today. Fish on in the first 5 minutes - a beautiful chrome doe. Lost about another 4. Lots of fish moving in. Fished the very lower Fraser.

5 Pinks went home and at least 10 released for a buddy of mine and myself ALL on the Fly up river from 2 Bit Bar. We saw at least 50 more fish caught there by the Gear guys.

Orange with silver seemed to be the ticket for the gear guys, Chartreuse for the Fly guys.

Tons of clean fish moving through between 9am-2pm!!!!

Rick

Well it was a very uneventfull evening. No chinook or coho to be caught, oh well guess I can't get lucky all the time ;D Settled for six of these guys, all released ;)

This fish does have a small chunk out of its back, my guess would be seal

are the seiners allowed to keep all species, or only pinks?

The river definitely put on a show tonight. It would have been better if fish were staying on the hook. ::)

Some incredibly bright fish are coming in at last.

I fished yesterday from 430 till about 730 first 10 mins FISH ON brought a nice male into the net. Within 5 mins of catching this one i hooked into another one but lost it at my feet. One hour goes by nothing then on the next cast i Felt a hit but missed it kept reeling then a 14 inch Bull Trout was brought in for a quick picture and gently released. Man those things just love to chase down lures. within the next 5 or so cast nothing and as i am about to pull my lure out of the water BAM! another Bull trout hit my lure quick fight but i lost him at my feet again. Did a quick check on my lure to make sure the hook was sharp and it was so eh. The next little bit nothing but lots of fish moving thru. It was a great day. Rodney now i know why u love chasing those BullTrout in the tidal fraser  ;)

Fished my usual spot near the mouth of Kanaka creek between 6 and 8 last night. Very quiet but managed to pick up one small fresh male just after getting there. A couple young guys downstream from me were commenting on picking up a nice coho, but I wasn't able to confirm, just saw the garbage bag... Very little showing close to shore this evening. There appeared to be a decent push through the middle of the river just as it was starting to get dark.

All the time you spend fishing for pinks you could be where the fish are and catch something. Also you donot have to fish next a Canuck fan. ;D

Too tiring to drive that far. Here I only have to drive for ten minutes to hook a fish. ;D

Why leave fish to find fish, right Rodney ? Besides, who wants to fish next to a Laugh fan ? ;D
