Title: Malloch's Side Caster Reel 1890's

Hey

So I recently inherited an old Malloch's Side Caster reel made sometime between 1884 and 1892. It is Solid Brass and is in decent shape. I figured out how you are suppossed to cast this reel, how it works and all that jazz. All and all, it is actually pretty friggin neat, though equally friggin heavy. It is in working condition too so i was planning on using it at some point.

Three Questions:

1) Anyone ever gone through the process of cleaning a Brass anything? If so, what process did you use?
***2) Anyone have an idea what kind of rod i would use with this? And if so, where can i get one?***
3) Do you know anybody who i could consult about this?

That Malloch patent was quite revolutionary back in the day. The concept caught root in Australia where many surf fishermen still use the modern version of that patent.

Nice to hear you want to use it.
Can you imagine landing a 25-pound chinook on a bar rig with that thing? It would be quite a thrill!  :)

I know one of the guys there posted a sticky about cleaning old reels but it was alloy reels but you might find something about brass ones too.

hey matt, unless the reel is covered heavily in patina, you should probably just leave the brass be. Brass forms an outter layer that actually stops it from breaking down more. If you want to polish it up a lot we always use brasso and a rag. It restores the lusture and takes off a bit of that outer layer. That looks like a really cool reel, I would be interested to watch it casted.

I would say try a firepoker to support that beast! Just kidding - have a great time with that piece of history and make sure to catch something with it .. when you do = pics plz! :)
