Title: Artificials for Vedder River Steelhead
Post by: Sylus on September 05, 2011, 10:18:54 AM
Hello, my name is Sylus and i am new to this forum. I have been fishing for a number of years but just recently i have really become fascinated with Steelhead and i figured that it is about time i got my act together and got out fishing for them. This brings me to my question, i figured what better place to start my Steelhead career than the very productive Steelhead river that flows through my backyard, the Vedder. So i was wondering if you guys could help me out, i don't really want to fish roe and i was hoping to stick with artificials so could you guys tell me what some of the better artificial lures for Steelhead are? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Sylus

Try the roe fly, they work.
I dont start my steelhead hunt till december. I have the itch too but will both have to wait. ;D

Yeah a little early to get excited for winter runs, but I know the feeling :D

Artificials work just fine. I caught more last year on artificials than bait, but I didn't use bait too often once winter hit.

Goey bobs, plastic eggs and yarn, plastic worms and blades all work well.

rubber worm, and goey-bob I think they account for the most fish caught on artificial.

why do you want to fish artificials only? you will severely limit the amout of fish your going to hook without using bait...

other wise, 6'' worm in dirty water... jensen egg and wool and blade late season...

thanks for all the help, i was thinking about not using bait beacause i didn't want to go through the trouble of curing roe, but i was looking into it today and it looks pretty easy, so i will give that a shot once the salmon start moving in force :)

Jensen egg with tuff of yarn in clear water and gooey bob with tuff of yarn in coloured water works well often.
If you are not into roe, frozen shrimp (50~70 count/lb.) firmed up with coarse salt (with or without procure) is also an option to try without too much hassle.

for artificials my favs are small gold or silver colorado blaes, jensen egg with a tuff of peach wool, and orange goey bobs. Have also had good succes in early season with a small (about 1cm) red spin n glow with silver wings.
For floats my personal favorite is 20 gram drennens but there prety expencive as far as floats go. I often find myself using DNE floats in the 20 gram size. With floats try and stay away from rap around foam floats as your line cuts into them and because the lines rapped around it makes the bite not as easy to see the float go down.
And if you dont know youll want to have your float balanced so the float sits just below the coloured top of the float.

And if you take a trip to van. island try a flyrod with an indicator, couple small split shots and small shrimp style flies for summer runs.
