I have the book "The fly tying bible" By peter gathercole its good book and has 100 patterns in it. There are step by step for each fly. You could buy this book online, or I don't know if people will frown uppon this but you could also download it, via torrent

Rolled muddlers are a pain to tie and they make a mess :)
skip the deer hair and use a bead for a much friendlier fly that works just as well :) (better!)

I tie mine with both deer hair and a bead with no pain and a little bit of mess, but I would be interested in seeing an image of your hairless muddler.

Rolled Muddlers are my go to flies for coho, tie some up in olive with gold body and hang on!
-
hey now Speychucker, the Olive gold body/bead is almost like a secret cause noone uses them for some reason LOL that and natural ar my top producers for coho.
I will be testing a muddler variant this year which takes alot less time to tie and has no damn deer hair

Hook, are you talking about olive/gold dubbing for the body or olive body, gold ribbing?
thanks.

Nice, thanks.

Actually I tie my Olive ones with gold body and gold bead so it matches and I have found it works better
ps - if that's what you have there it didn't look it because I'm viewing on my phone.

No flash?? I like em with flash and a fine gold wire to make em last more then one fish :) I also like to fish em down to a #12. The naturals are my second favorite James ;)

I do some with flash and some without, and just give the mylar a quick brush of thinned Hard As Hull, makes em pretty tough. Usually the deer hair falls apart before the mylar unravels.

What do you use to thin Hard as Hull?
I have a have full bottle that's getting kind of thick.
-
I think I'll go to the fly shop and see if they have thinner specifically for hard as hull but it does say on the bottle that there is acrylic ingredients.

I have not use Hard as Hull, but some head cements can be thinned with a few drops of water, especially if it has Acrylic ingredients.
-
To thin Hard As Hull I use a eye dropper and add acetone, a few drops at a time until you get the consistency you want.
-
I just use brushable Loctite over the mylar tinsel which makes it almost bomb proof, no need for a wire ribbing then. I also add the flash to mine under the deer hair wing but over the mallard flank.
Hook - really does hate tying these damned things :-(
