Title: Burnaby lake
Post by: ihatefisheadsoup on August 31, 2011, 09:29:28 AM
I went to deer lake after work, was fishing on the east side (boat rental dock). first cast...tight line!! reel...reel...and reel.. oh crap..weed!!! second cast weed... I took a closer look at the water there full of WEED everywhere!!
Has anyone fished Burnaby Lake(not Deer lake)? any access? is it full of weed as well, at least not as much as Deer Lake?

There are a few access points to Burnaby lake, the major one is the rowing club dock, the other is on the nature trail, if you have a canoe even better, beware its more difficult to fish than deer lake, they just dredged it so it might be better than it was... i grew up in the area and know every stream and body of water in the area... except squint lake... never did get to fishing it...

Burnaby lake has huge carp in it... and the occasional rainbow that makes its way down deer lake brook.. also lots of pikeminnow. There are other fish species, but they are few and far between.

There are pikeminnow in Burnaby Lake?  Since when? Didn't know that...  I used to fish it as a little kid back in the day but never caught anything except a catfish.  I used to live nearby.  How's the fishing by the mouth of the brunette river?  I fished it once as a kid. but I didn't know what I was doing.

I used to catch small pikeminnow on the dry fly in still creek(size 22 mosquito) the brunette has a healthy population also, i have never been successful at the mouth of the brunette, although i have seen some carp and what appeared to be a sucker caught by the dam.

July 2015, Burnaby lake, floating dock. Fly fishing a chironomid, 20cm below an indicator.

I've fished a total of 16 times at this lake. Trolling, bottom fishing, float fishing, lures, plugs, crankbaits, worms, fake-eggs, poppers, spinners, spoons, frogs, dough, corn, trout eggs in different times of the year.. yet with no success.

Until I brought the fly rod out :D

In order to have much of a chance of catching a decent carp, you would need to reach the water on the far side of the lake and have a bait on the surface or dangling just below a float, above the weeds. With such a giant and healthy lake to feed in, the fish have no reason to go near the noisy floating dock.

If you mean piper's spit dock, you see big carp there - a lot of big carp. Only problem is the ducks going for the bait and the chance of hooking them. :/

Apparently there's a lot of bass in Deer lake...but shore fishing is far from ideal. Gotta get out on the water for your best chance at catching anything.

Thanks BC Fishing for the report! I've always wondered what would be a good fly for carp.... good to know that chironomids worked.
Now only if we could figure out what flies the big carp want to take  ;D
