I was using the same set up (bottom fishing with shrimp) while fishing for Shiner Perch today in the Burrard Inlet. Didn't catch as much as anticipate... wished the shrimp stayed on the hook a bit better while those little buggers nipped at it.

If you can use some thing like a little piece of herring or something and drag it across the bottom. They love to snap at anything as it passes they're waiting place.
They are stealth hunters and will attack a moving object.

good luck ;D

What fun,
For little shiners my kids always used hotdogs ,works like a charm.
But for the bigger Pilings Peach.. the ones that can grow a couple of pounds or more , the best bait is tiny crabs.
At low tide , turn a few rocks over and collect them up.
I think the little black and white spotted ones are the best. lol
But seriously....
If you really want to catch a perch.....tiny crabs...and tiny hooks, just hook them right thru the shell.
They stay on the hook and the perch really have to work at to get the meat out.
and if there was every a fish, that you need  to set the hook with, it's a perch.

scrappy little things
: )

Gibbs minnow smallest size. They used to come with a treble hook that had to be changed to single barbless. Used on a light setup. Tip it off with some wiener if they don't attack right away.

You can try chicken (skin) to fish for the flounder. I have caught them before using this.

sea worms are best ,you find them under rocks at low tide, keep them moving on incoming tide for sole on sandy beaches.

try using small strips of squid, it works about the same as shrimp but stays on the hook a lot better

I've found when barfishing Lower Fraser if I scrape my weight along the bottom they will bite.  Not so much when just still barfishing.  I think they are fairly aggressive!

We used to get the sea worms from underneath the dock we fished off {for perch}when we were little kids. They are everywhere, just look underneath the finger docks and grab a bunch. The little crabs were are favorite as well when we were young, ahh the good times back then.

When I was smelt fishing with my dad I would use half a shiner that was caught in the net and would do quite well for flounders.

Flatfish can be caught year round but success is usually higher in the summer months due to temperature.

It was really easy to catch them using strips of frozen squid.
They stay on the hook well and sole/flounder gobbles them up with gusto.
