Hey, it depends what area of vancouver island your going too. There is good fishing right now in port renfrew out at owen point and also good fishing off otter point in sooke. You could launch at pedder bay and fish off race rocks and head out to otter point. You could also launch from sooke ( it is a lot closer to otter point) right now there are alot of boats off otter point picking up springs, pink, and sockeye. You could also fish off victoria but you will have to go quite a ways out from land, the salmon head futher away from land after passing rocky point/pedder bay. I can't really help you any up island, but southern island you could call island outfitters, and northern island you could call gone fishing for info

how is the water is sooke and how far out is otterbay?

There is fairly strong currents off of otter point but not nearly as strong as the church rocks, race rocks area out of rocky point. Out at otter point it gets deep fairly fast so you are withing a few hundred meters from shore( thats where the fish are ) You could launch at a couple of places, and the fishing is pretty good.
