Title: Capilano
Post by: keithbreeve on July 24, 2011, 03:01:36 PM
Hi Everyone,

Pretty new to fishing the Cap. I check out the capliano kayaking website to see how high the water is, but at what height is fishing best?

Also other than the cable pool what are some other decent spots down the river? I hate hiking down the canyon only to find a group of people fishing the area, it makes for an exhausting day.

Thanks,

Brett

I like it around a 3 or 4... Google "Capilano River Regional Park Trail Map", good map of the river/trails and go explore.

Trust me Brett, there are more than a few guys that have spent days on the cap hiking up and down for no fish and bad water conditions, that's why its called fishing. Go explore and find a couple good spots.

Ya for sure, It can be quite exhausting. What side do you find better trails on East or West? I have found a few decent spots on both sides, but usually pretty busy.

the cap is usually a very crowded river but if you're adventurous you can usually find a few spots to hide ;)

You wouldn't happen to be the guy I saw fishing from a bush the other day?

haha no not fishing from a bush, and chromekings I have read the regulations a few times, so I am keeping it legal and have only caught and released.

I think cutthroat22 was replying to Fishing in Vancouver's post.

Chromekings wasn't implying that you are breaking any rules, rather just reminding all to watch out for violators and report them.

There have been times some of my favorite runs have been occupied past capacity so I decided to fish in seclusion in some less desirable runs only to have 2-3 others fish right beside me. I think if anglers see someone fishing a spot, others are naturally drawn to it whether it holds fish or not.

If you get out early, you should find a few spots to yourself (for a while anyways)

I will give you some concrete direction and specifics of fishing the Cap.

Early morning, at first light, try out Cable Pool & series of pools below (House Rock, Dog Leg etc) with roe, krills, flies, spinners & spoons. But don't do it on the rocks when the Capilano camera shot shows the water level is 4' or above, as the water is too fast at the pools and dropping off there may mean sure drowning. You can also try the Keith Road Pool  (access from West Van) or the run right above the Marine Drive bridge, but time your trip with a good high tide only. Just go there and ask around from experienced guys. For other time of the day, it is less productive but you can still get into some fish with a good tide at the lower end. Cap fishing is not consistent though these days. So expect quite a few skunked trips.

Just remember there is a bait ban starting August 1. Good luck.

Thanks for the input Liketofish. Appreciate all the help from the board. Still have some roe I need to use up so I will probably get out again soon.

What about fishing seymour? I see that there is a lower limit there, and read a few guys on the board mentioned that the fishery on Seymour isnt in great condition.

Although I mostly catch and release, would seymour be worth my time?

Why there is no people fishing at Capilano river mouth (from CPR railway bridge downstream ) ?
Quit a few anglers at Jetty. They said from Marine Drive bridge downstream both east and west sides of bank are First Nation reserve, we can walk BUT CAN NOT fish even on the west side. >:(
Is that true ? ??? ???
I checked the previous posts here and asked some tackle stores the answer is we actually can. ::)

i was thinking the same thing today when i went there. i guess it would be north of the CPR bridge going towards the hatchery the water was relatively calm and clear today. i saw quite a few fish swimming from perched high up on the bank but did not see anyone fishing. it looks like a great spot but i was wondering why no one would be there. Although when i went to the hatchery i saw about 12 people at coho loop crammed into one little area. Weird?

Between both marine drive bridge and the CPR bridge, both sides is native only.

There are river fisheries working 24/7 that area. If they see you inside the boundry they will simply point that  out and ask you to leave .it is private property.

when you say marine drive bridge do you mean the one that runs into park royal or the new one that runs into the lions gate bridge? i've never seen people fishing there but i dont see any signs that says you cant...

go to google and click on maps and in the search box type "Wardance Street, British Columbia". That is the bridge that takes you into park royal. Now you should see marine drive on the map from the point on down to the first bridge (which is the train bridge) is first nation fishing grounds. after the train bridge... on the ambleside you can fish that area.

I thought the law in BC means noone owns the river itself, only the bank. So the natives can stop you accessing the river via the bank... but they cant stop you fishing the flow at that spot.

Maybe I should get my kayak out and test that theory some time?!?

Flying rocks may possibly come your way! There is plenty of other river to fish for right or wrong. Those runs do look darn fishy though.

Please let us know when you plan to do that. That would be Youtube worthy footage, plus you should notify the closest hospital that you will be coming in a head of time.

We'll start a fund for his rehab now  ::)

There are 5 km of river to fish.  No need to test the forbidden waters of that stretch.

Cable pool is the place to be if you want to fish where there are hundreds of coho stacked up.

"Cable pool is the place to be if you want to fish where there are hundreds of coho stacked up." HAHA.... :D :D

BAIT BAN IN EFFECT  on the Capilano now!!! Be aware, there is now an undercover officer(oops..) patrolling Capilano. He was so obvious but the funny thing was that he was there when there was only a couple people fishing and didn't stick around to long.

Undercover, ala plastic moustache/glasses combo?  ;D

Also - PLEASE do not fish Cable pool from the rocks.  Every year, people fall in.  Walk a little bit, hike a little bit, get to fish water without doing some from such a high rock.  The mortality rate for a fish you have winched up the rock face is substantially higher than that of a fish you brought to hand right at your feet.  My $0.02

or you have to brave enough to climb over the boulder and down the stairs  ;D could be a painful fall though.

Its not the safest way that for sure, a telescopic net is the way to go! im only 28 so still fairly fit with good balance... ive done the climb more times than i can remember... never had a problem... but did have some close calls, especially when its raining :o  somebody dies on that river every year :(
If your not familiar with the rocks or the river, do not and i repeat DO NOT climb, especially with a lively fish on the end of your line.

A telescopic net is what ya need.
