how can you prove they arent Bull trout when bulls and dollies look identical and extremely hard to tell the difference without gene testing. ;) lol
the one in your pic i would probably also call a Dolly because it doesnt have the large head that most searun Bull trout have but then again how can we really be 100% sure. I see pics of bulls from the Upper Pitt that look just like that one ;D
Great fish though !! glad to see you kids having some luck out there

wow nice looking fish! ... I spent the last few months trying to find a bull/dolly with no luck yet .... :) whereabouts generally on the lower fraser do you recommend (without giving away your spot ; ?) I recently switched to using a spreader bar which someone suggested to keep my bait off the bottom ....
Thanks for sharing your pics!

You can tell the difference... They wouldn't have even done gene testing had no one noticed they looked different.
After a few months in school I would say I could most of the time given a good picture. It's even more obvious when you put 2 side to side.
It has to do with head/mouth size vs body, body sections, etc.
Bull Trout have larger heads and mouths compared to body size whearas Dollies have a more streamline shape and smaller heads.
Dollies also generally have a more round cross section where bull trout are more flat on the bottom.
In this case I'd say he's right with dolly.

These species are known to cross breed so there are a lot of hybrids out there so positive identification is never easy, however, you can usually tell a pure bull from a pure dolly.
