Well, I've decided that I want to try to get my CI designation from the FFF. I don't want to hear the criticisms of those that do not believe in the FFF (if any of you have checked out some of the threads on speypages you'll know what I mean), as this is more about proving my abilities on a test that is the most widely accepted in the industry.
I can't spend the big bucks, wouldn't if I could! Just wondering what your advice would be as far as rod and line for a seven weight setup.

Thats a pretty broad question. The biggest part of rod choice comes down the the individual caster, their rod action preferences and their intentions of use with the rod. Some people like slower action rods and some very fast action. There are also so many rods available in each action at various price ranges. I would think as an individual looking to become a certified instructor, these would be things you would already know. Or at least when looking for suggestions, start out by saying I like using a xxxxxx action rod and looking to keep the budget at $XXX and this is what I need to be able to do with it.

I prefer a medium-fast rod as it better suits my casting style. As far as cost, as low as possible please! In terms of my expectations, I prefer a rod that I can use to put casts towards a very small target - accuracy over distance is more my taste.

I agree with BNF861, if your becoming an instructor you should know what rods are suited for you. You woudnt need the advice from anyone here. Go to a flyshop and false cast a bunch of different rods in your price range. Buy the one you like the feel for.

All I was really asking was whether or not anybody here had had a good experience with a particular rod in this class range, that was it!

For what it's worth - I love Redington (the Redfly) prefer in an 8 weight for Salmon - casts (fast action) and fishes a fast sink tip just superb.

TFO makes a nice medium/fast action fly rod for the money. Great warranties as well!

IMO TFO's are fast and not medium/fast. Especially in their 7-9wt category. Dont limit yourself to just a new rod, look for a used one. I just saw a Scott A2 on another forum for just over $100.
Another mid range rod would be looking at an Echo rod, very nice for the price and a medium action rod. Some of the lower end Sages can be bought for under $300.

I would add that one company's medium fast is another's fast and so on... that's why it gets difficult to make recommendations. I love sage rods but if I wanted something medium fast I wouldn't look at any of their rods. One thing I do like is the progressive flex rods, firm butt and softens as it reaches the tip. Good feel to the tip for accuracy and lots of power to put the boots to a fish.

I'm a big fan of Fenwick HMX...
Love the TFO I have right now though, can almost cast into the backing with a roll cast and easily into the backing with around 4-5 false casts...

Yeah I fish a five weight TFO for most of my fly fishing and have really come to like it. I have cast more expensive rods as well but have always preferred the action of the TFO I already own. They also have really good warranty support. Sent them in a broken section and had a new one shipped back to me the same day they received it (expedited shipping as well!).
