Was watching some youtube videos, a guy was fly fishing and was using gulp alive minnows as bait and doing quite well .... do you guys use alot of baits other than your typical flies such as soft plastics? Would throwing on soft plastics on the end of a fly rod defeat the whole purpose of fly fishing? Noob question from a noob fisher ;D

Defeats the purpose in my mind...
The best fly caught fish are the fish caught on a fly you made yourself.
Although fighting a fish is fun on a fly rod no mater what.
If I was new to the sport and not catching anything, I would probably do whatever works.
At this point I'm stubborn and 99% of the time a fly I tied myself is on the end of the line.

I'm the same way. There's something satisfying about catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself.

I've been known to put a Colorado on the end of my spey, and it ca be done with a fly rod.
What ever floats your boat :-\
PS, I hand built it, if that counts, LOL.
-
Im also guilty of colorado's on the spey rod LOL
HOOK - trying Dick Nite's next ::)

I see nothing wrong with it.
Innovative hybrid technology.

--just use care when casting..the extra weight and if pulled back straight toward the rod could hit and break the tip.
-you also didn't mention what weight rod you are using... again might not be as big an issue on a heavier rod
--Like most I prefer to cast a fly on a fly rod but I have seen in several fly boxes of even well know fly fishers small dick knites etc... maybe they just fell into their fly boxes.

Don't have a problem with soft plastics. Just be careful if using split shot or metal lures on a graphite fly rod. If that lead or metal hits the rod while casting, it can cause a weak spot and in no time flat instead of a nine foot rod, you will have a six or five foot rod. ;D

And remember just 'cuz it's on the end of a fly line doesn't make it a fly.
If there's a bait ban those scented gulp baits are not allowed.
