Title: Tidal Fraser River, April 21st 2011
Post by: Rodney on April 21, 2011, 09:05:34 PM
We went out for an hour tonight after dinner again. The tide was just starting to come in. The bite came on pretty soon after we settled down. I lost one first, then briefly contacted another one during a hook-up, then Nina landed this pretty fish.

Again, it was a well fed, silver spring bull trout.

There were lots of coarse fish around, made determining the correct bites more difficult.

Nice fish ...the head/body ratio seems more true dolly varden than bull to me.

Head and body ratio is not a good way to differentiate bull trout and dolly varden actually. Here's an in-depth discussion of this topic with some comments from someone who is most familiar with this subject.

The spinning rod was built from a 9' Rainshadow 4wt flyfishing rod blank. The reel is a Shimano TwinPower 2500 (European model).

If you fly down to YVR, you can just hop off the airplane at South Terminal, walk down to the bank and catch some... ;) It can't be that expensive? ;D

Once again, beautiful fish Rodney. How's the coarse fishing right now? I have some newbie fishing friends that want to give it a shot in early May.

Hey Rod, that is a nice fish!!  Enjoyed your latest video as well!! I was curious about one thing.  Even though visibility in the lower Fraser is down to nothing, do you think spinning with a large bright spinner might attract some fish?

It should work. I've caught them before on spinners when water visibility was almost zero. I don't see why not as I see them feeding on small fish when the water is dirty. The chance is just pretty slim as it'd take more casts to get a spinner in front of the fish. We were out for a little bit yesterday and saw quite a few rises, unfortunately there was not a single bite so bait is not always that much more productive.

We've seen some peamouth chub already, but you should definitely try coming down here with them and fish for bull trout instead. :)

Thanks Rodney, good to know. Maybe we will run into each other next week, and then you can show me the ropes on how to catch cool fish out of the tidal Fraser.  ;D
