Title: Chilliwack River, April 14th 2011
Post by: HOOK on April 14, 2011, 01:44:23 PM
I had a late start and didnt get to the river until about 9am which made me fishing at about 9:15, I was the only spey or fly fisherman in between 3 other guys throwing guts (i know they were because i was talking to them) and i was the only one that hooked and landed a fish. I was done at 10:25 this morning  ;D

Nice HOOK  ;) Always helps the confidence to get one on a fly beside the gear guys.  Just wished it happened more often for me ;D
Dave, in a fly caught drought ...

Very nice! Especially amongst the gear.

Ater a few outings with my single hander, I decided that throwing heavy tips and flies with one hand sucks. I picked up my first spey rod this week, hopefully the reel and line will come tomorrow and then let the obsession begin!

As another Dave caught in a fly drought, good on ya Hook.  While I continue to double haul single handed, it has been tiresome tossing those big flies, but the spey is still out of my budget.  Maybe if the government agrees to give me a raise this year, I might be able to pay off those student loans and have some dough to stimulate the economic recovery of local fly suppliers.  Until then the 9 footer is going to have to do to toss those big flies.

Steelie-Slayer - its not any specific pattern but my own creation. Its an Intruder style fly.

Yes it felt very good pulling the first fish in the run after having bait guys fishing it for awhile before my arrival. I saw a fish roll in the same line and was thinking there would be others in that same line of current  ;D who knows it could have even been the same fish i saw

I have also been in a big drought until the last month or so almost hooking up every trip or several times each trip, kept losing them to aerial gymnastics though  :'(

In the same boat, however, if you are using those C hooks (vs the J hooks I tend to use) you should keep more of those hooked up.

I use Owners as my trailer and tube fly hooks.

What kind of shape was the fish in? The head looks like it's been in the river awhile.

looks like a pretty decent fish...maybe just the glare of the sun giving it a weird shade?

The fish was chrome and a doe. I didn't feel the need to post more than one picture of the same fish. I took a couple shots and then dispatched the fish, no need to moleste it even if it's being killed.

Sidenote - she tasted great that night and again the day after :-)

I said that because i see lots of guys out there screwing around with their fish trying to get that perfect shot before either bonking it or releasing it  >:(  >:( even if your gonna kill there is no reason to let it gasp for air while you screw around ! I had the camera in my hand before i slid her on the rocks, took 2 shots (face and the gear/fish shot) then laid my rod down and gave her some sweet relief.

good for you man, committed to not molesting with photos....so you only took two........ bled her out, slit her belly, slid your hand in and grabbed her skeins, gently put them into a bag for later, and then you ate her that night.....if thats not molestation I don't know what is! Ha if I was a fish, think I'd prefer to be molested by a few photos, but not more than two cause thats not ethical

once they are dead it doesnt matter what happens now does it ? If it was a wild fish i would have no photos because she would have stayed in the water and released. I dont know why you seem to be taking offense by what i have said  ::) and no i didnt bleed her out because i fully cleaned her right away, packed up my stuff and left after briefly talking to a guy that showed up just after i bonked her, I gave the skeins to him also because i dont fish roe enough to need any right now.

and i took 3 photos, 2 before i bonked her and 1 after with my phone. How you can take such nice pics with an iPhone without getting it wet or dropping it in the water is beyond me because there is no way i could with my iPhone, I do really enjoy your shots regardless of my outlook on certain things  ;D

HOOK - tries to unhook his fish without touching them at all if they are being released  ;)
