Hey guys
Just wondering if you guys think this would be a good starter centerpin set up itll be my first cp so I dont want to spend to much. I dont know what reels better out of the three im looking at:
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/spo/2212312129.html
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/spo/2212215121.html
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/spo/2152135367.html
I am thinking the 3rd option simply because its almost new and is a nice looking reel this is the rod I am looking at
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/spo/2160572720.html
Thanks guys and if you have something for sale around these prices send me an email :) and remember this is just a starter cp setup I currently have a levelwind
-
Tournament Drifter - heavy reel, would be tiring on a long day
Seldexes - too much money, old ( a newer model Seldex for that price would be a good deal )
Okuma - nice light reel, quite well made, good reel to learn on and decide if you like using a centrepin. You can upgrade later if you decide and always keep the Okuma as a back up reel.
Thanks for the input, the okuma was the one i was thinking of getting, its the newest and now sounds like the one im gonna get. How do u think the rod would be?
-
couple years back i got a trophy rod and reel combo from freds for $250. didn't want to spend a bunch and find out i didn't like the whole c-pin thing, but it works great and would never go back.

Would you happen to still have this setup and willing to sell?
-
ya i still got it but not for sale. go in there and check them out.

I had a original tournament drifter, Made in Canada model and really liked it. I regret selling it. The later drifters were made off shore but if that is an original and I think it is from the handles I would recommend that reel.
That 11 3 Amundsen rod would be a good match for it.
IMHO
-
all i can say is when you got a cp you will never want to use anything but your cp. you will as excited as a school girl with beiber fever when you hook your first fish...
-
like joska said, once u try one, u will never go back, IMO, save up and get a nice one, you wont regret it. if u buy a cheaper one this year next year your gonna be getting a nicer one anyways so id say its worth waiting till u have the cash to get the one you really want
-
thanks for the help guys im probly gonna get the rod and in a couple months get an islander

I agree. I tried centepinning a few years ago but I was flyfishing so much never gave it a fair chance and sold it ( just had an old Avon ) well before Xmas I asked my wife to buy me one for Xmas. She ended up buying me an Okuma Aventa. I looked at it and wasnt impressed and wanted a good one. I took it back to Hatchmatchrs and traded up to an Islander. Been out with it a few times and boy do I love that reel. I have taken it out only twice but both times got into a fish but not landed yet. I dont see myself using a bait caster much anymore other than when I must. I love flyfishing more than any other type of fishing but using a centerpin is a close second.

Ya i do alot of fly fishing, but for winter steels flies just arent as effective. My current Levelwinds getting a bit worn and have tried cp in salmon season and got a couple chum and it was great, its like the play and fight of a flyrod with the casting simplisity as a drift rod(basiclly).

and remember most importantly you look cool and like you know what ur doing if you fish a centerpin. Ha fish a small calcutta you will be able to cast more effectively and get in more casts in a day. The stigma about fishing a centerpin reel is overated. save ur money .
-
The centerpin Love-in does get a bit tiring to read but what I find amusing is that it seems to bug guys like you that can't afford a centerpin so you go and post something negative when some young guy is getting exciting about trying something different. How about you take your own advice and save your money and try it for yourself. Don't read it if it bugs you!!
PS Are you related to DennisK?? :D
x2 :D ;D :P

Ha ,lmao when i read this...I agree, using a nice Gold Calcutta is the most effective way to fish for the Steel.Getting alot more casts in and a faster retrieve will get one into more fish. ;)I dont really care about looking cool either when im out there. ;D

The best thing about a centerpin is its a single action reel. I have played many fish on single action reels on the salt and their is nothing like it. Its just you and the fish. With a baitcaster the drag does all the work. I am not a meat fisherman so for me its all about the fight.

Meat fisherman...Ouch that hurt...I keep the reel on free spool when im playing a fish the only difference is im using my thumb instead of my palm for drag. ;D

I didnt mean for it to sound like everyone who uses a baitcaster is a meat fisherman. I dont eat fish with orange or red flesh as I dont like it. I like my white fleshed fish like halibut and cod as well as all shellfish. Salmon, trout etc all tastes to fishy to me no matter how it is cooked ( trust me I have tried every which way )

I dont think im related to DennisK LOL but iunno.
and for the calcutta I already a small levelwind (shimano cardif) and want to try a cp now as i am experienced with the levelwind and get lots of steelies and know my route and where they lie. And my dad has a small callcuta its not really my kind of reel, dont like how small it is and finds its a funny casting reel. Besides I release 99% of fish i catch, and the levelwinds kinda boring you dont feel the fish enough, and they suck for fishing jigs! Recently started tying them and want to try them but cp gives them the best action.
and im with bbronswyk2000 im not a fan of the taste of fish, not even smoked but i do like fish n chips :)
Hey and u guys have got a cp reel or rod or combo for sale for around $200 send me an email my emails on my profile, I would really like an islander but I dont think any of you will give it to me for the low price ;) :D
-
x2 :D ;D :P
I have a custom built 3106lb and orginal milner sitting in my closet buddy, I can affford a center pin rod. But thanks for the jab. Ive fished it many for years and have decided that when I fish for steelhead that I want to opptimise my opportunity to catch a fish. Now since there is so much pressure on the rivers these days, a guy needs every advantage he can get .Imho. I know lots of good fisherman who fish with centerpins and they prefer that and that is fine. But I chuckle to myself when I see all these guys walking around looking the part but dont have a clue. taking up space.

i quoted the wrong comment

If you're very very lucky you might find a steelheader for close to $200 with wear and tear. But not a rod and reel combo for that much. Check eBay and craigslist. I picked one up in the fall and have only fished it a few times, still not entirely used to it. I used to fish an old silex and loved casting that busching reel opposed to the ball bearings. If I wasn't afraid of destroying my silex I'd still be fishing it...
I suggest starting out with a trophy rod or Amundsen to start and maybe you can find an old Avon royal.

i went through this all when i asked questions.why do the "hot shots" have to run there mouths? steely-slayer your a young kid and its great to see that you have such a strong passion for the sport we all love so much. to be 15...16 in a few days ;) and want to buy a centerpin. you got a good head on your shoulders... this is my first iron season with a pin and well i wish i had it for the salmon in the fall. i went with an islander steelhead and a streamside rod, a cheap rod but its does the trick,i have my eye on a few options. as time goes on you will upgrade and have a closet full of pins like all these well rounded vet's.
-
wow chromekings you got some nice looking pin setups there :)
and yeah i already have a big collections of rods, but just need that pin to get my collection how i would like :)
-
Steely Slayer, I got my first pin set up last year and you don't need to break the bank. I've got an Grice and Young Avon Supreme and it is perfect for fishing most lower mainland flows for Steel and Salmon. They are an old school reel, but they spin good, are very sturdy and you can pick one up for around $100, there are tons of good rods around that won't break the bank too, Shimano Convergence, Fewnwick HMX, Amundson and those Trophy XL pin rods are all great for the money. If you like it and I'm sure you will, you can retire that setup as a back up or just use it to hammer on the springs and chums and get something with a little more finesse for Coho and Steelhead when you get the money. Do I want a Sage, Loomis, Lamiglas and a Milner etc? Hell yes! Do I need them? Probably not.

thanks for the help
i have been looking at the trophy XL float rods on ebay the have some really good deals, but im not sure if i want a 13'6 or a 15' i currently have a 10'6 drift rod
-
I would advise you stick with 10-6 for a starter.. 8#-17# rated min....13'-15',sounds more like a spey rod than a pin-rod

No worries, I'd go with something 11 - 11'6, I've got a 10'6 and wish I had a bit of a longer rod on the Vedder so I didn't have to high stick as much to keep the line off the water.
-
i prefer using my 3113lb or my 11'6 6/7wt pin rod, the extra length is nice, when the water is lower i use my 3106lb.
the only real advantage to using a levelwind is the ability to switch up to spoons or spinners.. but if i want to do that, i leave my float gear at home and just spoon fish. I can get pretty much the same amount of casts in as most levelwind guys with my pin and the drift and control is much nicer

when im fishing spoons or spinners usually ill just short float them in rivers. I find i loose to many spoons without floats :P

Dennis, let me get this straight, you play the fish with your thumb only? So that big nate that you nearly brought to hand a while ago was played with no drag? do you have a leather patch for your thumb because if not I have a hard time believing this

i think he may have misquoted himself...you can't free spool without setting the trigger arm every time you crank the reel...also, if you loosen your drag to that effect, you wouldn't be able to retrieve line because the bearings won't catch.

Better control and feel of the fish using your thumb for drag. When i reel in the levelwind engages and when the fish runs i disengage the reel and then use my thumb for drag. Of course one cant do this on large fish epescially fraser river springs as they peel alot of line out very rapidily and ya your thumb would burn off.You fellas make me laugh because you think you know everything.I started fishing when most of of you were just a twinkle in your Daddys eye. ;D

Dont know who Dennis K ,my user name is Dennis T.I havent been on this site for very long.I have been on the other site with the same user name Dennis T for a couple of yrs now,so lets get that straight ??? Because you use a cp doesnt make you superior to anyone.Im expressing my humble opinion on the topic. To each his own partner.Tight Lines. ;D

Well after creeping on the sight for years now i finally signed up due to this thread. HAHAHA I love this stuff.
I would have to completely agree with comments made by shortfloat and DennisT. I've fished many years with a centerpins and they definitely have their time and place, however I like to catch fish, as many fish as possible in fact. Thus, why i now fish a small levelwind. Why... well its only simple logic, you can generally fish quicker though area due to the increased retrieve ratio, your more accurate in longer distance casting, you can achieve more casts throughout the day, in many situations it's easier to cast in confined spaces, and the benefits could go on. I too disengage the drag when fighting a fish, not very difficult to manage this task and utilise your thumb. I know i fish more effectively when I'm on the water with a levelwinds than a centerpin.
There are certainly alot of hero's on the water utilising the stigma of being a pin fisherman as being a good fisherman. Not always the case from what i see out there.

Oh ya, and chromekings, i can afford whatever gear i want. it has nothing to do with money.
