Both, time and place. Dirty water and pocket water Ill use lead.  Longer slower runs, or lower clear water ill use split shots.

Split shots for slower water and pools and pencil lead for faster water.

Never liked carrying a pound of lead around in my vest, which is how much those coils weigh. Plus split shot takes less effort to adjust your weight.

--slinky: best of both worlds.

--either split shot in a shoe lace or split shot in rubber tube.. can add or remove shot at will plus smooth outer surface.
--and can use non-lead shot
--While gold panning... I'm sure you all do in your spare time on the Fraser...the heavy black sand that the gold flakes are in is a good weight source for a lite slinky... you can remove gold first if you wish.

--have also used old bird shot cheap from the trap range to fill slinky.. if you're old enough.. remember the lead shot bean bag ashtray for your car.. or office paper weights.

-- cool camo boot laces work well or you could use bright coloured laces.. as long as they melt.

i am gonna trie 55 caliber bird shot as chuck at freds says he uses all you do is drill a hole threw it and you use way less weights

Last summer somebody showed me how to attach surgical tubing to a line so that it is adjustable up and down the line.  Then he inserted the lead into the tubing, of course.  I have since forgotten how he tied the tubing to the line and I can't find a "how to" video on youtube.
If anybody knows what i'm talking about or seen a video, please attach a link.  Thanks.

BTW, i prefer split shot; however, might switch to pencil lead.  You don't have to carry the entire coil, just cut off three pieces for the day.

Split shot now. I used to only use pencil lead but I've always wondered if the act of pinching metal onto mono/fluoro destroys the line in anyway.???

For the few times a year I gear fish I use split shots. Used to use pencil lead but my line would twist. What's the solution for that?

I think he's referring to using the shot inside of a shotgun shell.  Shells are sold by "shot number" which is the number and size of the "shot" or pellets inside the shell.  Depending on what animal you are hunting, you may use a shell w/ a lot of very small shot (like for birds) or a shell w/ only a few large shot, or slugs, like for deer.

I guess what you can do is open a shell, get the shot out, and drill a hole down the middle and use that as weight.  Thread your line right down threw it like a hollow pencil lead weight above the swivel.

"55 caliber" doesn't make sense and I think he's mistaken.  Here are the sizes:

--T-Turn swivel (trade name)
--some pencil lead comes with surgical tubing already attached to a swivel

Splits 98% of the time but you may catch me with a slinky for the other 2%.

Rapids and shallow waters: pencil lead (small bead between lead and swivel is a good idea)
Pools and slow water: split shots (all non-removable except top one)

Just run the line through the tubing and put the lead into the bottom of it. It gets pinched to the line with the tubing. Another method is to use two sections of tubing with the line running through them and slide over the top and bottom section of the lead for a more streamline presentation.

EBay sells them. To give u an example on price, there's one on there for $29 for a 5 lb bag of size #4 and another one for $21 for a 5 lb bag of reusable 3/8 oz.

Question... does your lure/bait presentation look or act different depending on the type of weight you use?
