If you are allowed only one lure/bait for steelheads, what would it be ?
-
Jigs
-
my go to is large size jensen egg with a tad bit of peach wool works great and is cheap :) and after iv drifted the whole run twice with the jensen egg i switch to colarado gold hammered blade.
-
spoons man cover so much water the Ironhead is my goto steelhead spoon why no spoons in the list ?
-
not a very thorough list there. I normally just use wool when and if I ever gear fish for them. My choice of weapon is flies ;D
HOOK - might try swinging lures of some kind on the spey rod LOL
-
ok but if you wanna get technical then any form of bait is not a "lure" either. big heavy weighted flies are closer to lures than bait
any why only list Colorado's and leave out Ironheads, Kitimats, Kohos, Krocs and other typs of spoons that guys like to use
If you wanna talk gear then my favourites are Wool and Colorados, blades especially once the fry start to hatch ;)
-
I chose colorado spinner but it's actually a black mepps aglia with the furry tail and treble hook replaced with single.
-
There is no such thing as a go to steelhead lure lol. Half the steelhead battle is in the mind. You just cant quit and it will happen like anything in this world.

Exactly, My gotos are dependant on water condition.
Big (in your face type stuff) for dark water.
Smaller (more delicate presentations) for clearer water.
BUT! you have to get it in the zone.
You can fish with the right thing all day and not get a hit if you're not in the zone.
-
Rivers where bait is allowed - shrimp with tiny piece of orange wool
Bait ban Rivers - Pink worm in either 4 or 6 inches
-
My go-to steelhead tackle is variety, making sure I use something the next guy doesn't.
My last few steelhead were all caught on unorthodox items.
I'll never forget last year's episode when my buddy Tadpole approached me to take a picture of my landed steelie and commented: "WHAT? You caught it on THAT?" :D
Two years ago I hooked into three fish in 5 casts on a white plastic worm. A guy fishing the same run at the same time with pink worms didn't get a single hit.
That said, roe and roe bags are hard to beat, but I'd rather fool the fish than feed the fish, so I lean towards artificials.
Plus, it's not messy.
-
Brad's lighted plugs.
-
Anything with an echip on it.
-
in dirty/clean water....orange corkie with some white wool...worked twice for me this weekend!
-
i always attach a small magnet on my hook for my last few drifts through a run... ::) ::)

milo, what was the water visibility and temperature like when you hooked those 3 steel head using white worms?
Was it low viz high water or clear low water situation? Just curious as I am experimenting with different colour worms. :)

I have found white worms work better in clearer water or a slight green colour, but in grey water they dont really do much
-
Roe Flys, for gear guys.
-
C I L # 2 spinner works every time. :D ;D
-
My buddy Ralph swears by small 2" white worm (plastic), or orange jenson egg with white wool
-
My new go to is the Roe fly... been using is on the stamp/somass/vedder with huge success.
Tied it up about a month ago, used it on 6 trips so far and has hit 6 steelhead and a few rainbows. 5 of those Steelhead were behind guys using prawns/roe.
Def something I will be carrying around at all times, especially on bait ban systems.
-
My new go to is the Roe fly...
Trying to get an idea of a Roe fly. Any pics? ;D
-
Good topic. Jigs but I'm into substitutes because there to pricey. I would also like to try a Roe fly.
-
My new go to are my new blades. 24 carat gold plated Indiana blade.
-
HOOK - might try swinging lures of some kind on the spey rod LOL
[/quote]
pink rubber worm works great on a two hander
-
--if others on the water.... whatever they aren't using... same rig different colour or different rig
--I use compleat angler soft plastics... full variety of colours.. egg Klus-Terz, Egg ohzs, wing-dings etc.
--Can use the Klus-Terz in a row bag with scent where bait is legal

Yup finally found a supplier. Just need to find the swivels that you use lol ;D
-
Thanks for the pics guys.
I am always looking for something new to try and this is going to be fun. ;D
-
those roe fly's look good.
I have a question for all the veterans out there. When you tie on a single jensen egg and a piece of wool, what is the wool supposed to represent? fish spooge?
-
Roeseph, my best guess is it imitates the roe skein.
-
great pics every-day. the first one is superior...
-
That Roe fly looks awesome... do you use mono to thread the eggs on like that?
-
That roe fly looks mighty fine. Tight work, thanks for sharing that..

Nope... stretchy clear cord...
Yea the tie def worked better than I even thought it would. Pays to try whatever is on your mind in front of the vice!
Never seen anything really like it and I'm glad I tried tying it up... and spent time field testing it!
-
ED they look mint, how can someone get there hands on a few? Maybe if you get a batch made up post them on buy sell

It would be cool if you took your fly over to the Fly Fishing Cafe and give a demo on tying it for the people that can't figure it out and might want to try it on the vice...just a thought. :)
-
Your fan club is getting bigger by the hour! ;D
-
These Roe Flys work amazing! I was lucky enough to get a couple freebees from the guy. The first time I fished them I hit a fish behind ED in water he had just gone through with his own Roe Fly... ;) But it was all good as he had just took a hatchery fish.
I havent fished a Roe Fly for a week as both were lost to fish, one was hooked deep! The other broke me off as I was taking pictures of the Fly.
There great, waiting to get my hands on more! ;D

Hey Dan, maybe next years tuition! Sell a few hundred, then maybe, maybe post the recipe ;D ;D
I was fortunate to get a few of these unique flies .... I'm thinking these will be very collectible, kinda like Hardy Perfects, LOL, so I'm keeping mine, unfished for now ;)

I am not a fly guy but know some, can't see a true fly guy tying this on. Seems like a gear "fly" to me

Why would you give away a secret weapon?

Quite honestly I don't mind helping other people hook up with fish...

Designed as an actual fly. I have some with unscented eggs. I have had a few fly guys get some from me already.
ME Too....... maybe this could be a startup venture for you.You already have 3 customers ready! I will take a dozen!
If you guys are serious about buying them my email is steelheadfishing@hotmail.com
I was thinking $2.00 a piece if you pay shipping, $2.50 a piece if you don't.
Will probs be in Chilliwack for the next little while because of the strike at the school... about to go do some more field testing lol
-
Jigs are the way to go. Heres a trick to using jigs. There is always a time and place to use them. They are espically good on clear days. Also what is working out there right now is a "Aerojig 109 Orange" you can get them at gone fishin'. What I figured that really works well was tip the jig with half a pink worm ill post some pictures of my set up. And also on a clear day a "Clear drift" float is key.

Clear drift floats aren't key....
I do fine, and know many other people that do fine with a 4 inch stubby.
Hooked another 2 today in 4 hours on the fly lol.
-
Putting your lure, bait, fly etc in front of fish is far more important than a clear float.
-

Hmmm ??? Wonder what all the old timers were using for floats when they were catching all them steelies back in the day, sure wasn't no "Clear Drift Float" that's for sure. IMO there nothing special and won't catch you any more fish than if you were using a 99 cent dink float, but to each his own I guess. Some need the best, or should I say most expensive, even if they don't catch much, ;D

I agree with you, on the weekend i decided to pick up a couple clear drifts and 7 bucks for a float way over priced! i lost 1 after about 2 hours then went back to my foam floats (20g balsa style) and was still gettin fish. And i found the clear drifts to actually be annoying cus the bobber stoppers kept sliding on the line messing up my depth. But i mean if someone gave me a bunch of clear drifts i would probly be saying the opposite, saying 'you MUST use clear floats'. ::)
-
clear drifts are only $4 , drennans are $7. You got ripped off if you paid 7 for a cleardrift
my bad it wasa dreenan piker found the package in my vest
-
i've got all under control then ...except the ability to successfully locate them :-X
-
The GLX eggs have been treating me well lately.
-
Hey I've got some of those....when are we going fishing...shouldn't all GLX users become a united front?
-
The GLX egg at work. No "Roe-Fly" for me.

I'll have to post a few more pics from the last few days....
Me and a buddy hit 4 on Saturday amongst the crowds (on the fly), pissed a lot of people off lol.
Also hit 2 on Friday.
To each their own, but I'm definitely confident in the fly I tied. :P

My new goto lure is increasingly becoming single jensen eggs (anise scented).
I have always carried a small vial of jensen eggs in my pocket, but never really used it much, but recently started using it for clear water use and it works well.
Single eggs for clear water and double eggs for turbid water with a tuff of white/peach yarn on top.
In my last two outings, I hooked 3 and landed 2, and they were all on jensen eggs.
Single egg was used in ultra clear upper river and double eggs in lower river with viz of 2 feet or so.
However, well over half of time was spent using shrimp, pink worm or blades with no hits.
I don't use roe, so can't tell how it compares.

yeah I just started using them again with a small chunk of raw prawn for the white.
-
would have to say roe and jigs
-
this huge one was caught yesterday by a buddy on a pink worm while I was fishing with jesnen egg and yarn and another buddy was using roe just next to him.

I recently bought a few packs of glx's worms and I must say I'm quite impressed. Most worms have to be adjusted or replaced after a few missed hookset attemtps as they slide down or the lines rips through them. But these new ones stay put much better. Caught a nice big wild buck yesterday on a pink 4" worm in the upper river in gin clear water.
